Hello, I would like to thank everyone who responds to this post ahead of time. I am age 21 6'3" 200 lbs with a seditary life-style after an ankle injury that immobalized me for almost a year. I am slightly overweight, very thick frame, and muscles are small now. I would really like to bulk back up (In High school I benched 185, now I struggle with 100) and get into shape. My question is should I bulk first with weight training and cardio, or should I focus on trimming down 15 pounds and doing a lot of cardio before I put on more weight from bulking. Thanks again to everyone who helps me out.

Hello and welcome to ft. Personally, I would trim down first. Begin an exercise program here at ft. Begin slow and ease into it. Get acclimated to the exercises. They have a good 8 week program that will help you achieve some muscle building while at the same time slim you down. Also add cardio (3-5 times per week 25-35 miutes per) and educate yourself on the importance of diet. After 8 weeks you should be feeling good, seeing results, and have a better idea of what your goals are and how you want to approach them. Good Luck

Thats depends some people would say you should bulk get the mass then go through a cutting phase. -------------- I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it is gone past me I will turn to see fear's path. Ok lets say I choose to bulk first i.e more muscles burn more calories later. I have a diet in mind but I am interested in anyones opinion on the matter.
Breakfast: (1 cup oatmeal, 1 1/2 cup milk, 4 tbsp peanut butter, protein drink mix) and 2 Hard egg whites. Snack: 1 cup yogurt, 1 cup raisons. Lunch: 6 oz tuna sandwhich (lowfat mayo) 2 hard whole eggs in sandwich, slice of cheese. Small salad. 1 cup of milk. After workout drink: (Coconut milk, pineapple juice, 1 bananna, protein drink) Dinner: 8 oz chicken breast, 1 cup rice (cooked) or 1 cup of potatoes, 1/2 cup veggies or small salad. 1 cup of milk. Before Bed: 1 cup cottage cheese, if I can cram it in my mouth. Im taking Vitamin C, E, B-Complex, and a small multi-vitamin. Again, age 21 6'3" 195 lbs (weight today) with a medium matabolism. Thanks for the input! |

6' 3" 200 lbs. dosnt seem that overweight. Sounds alot like me when I started 8 weeks ago. I tried lots of different diets at first but finally settled on a low carb high protein solution (1650 to 1800 cals) that gets results pretty fast in my opinion without shocking the body into starvation mode. I dont know if its healthy or not, nor am I by any means a nutritionist, but it sounds like we have similar compositions and this has worked wonders for me.
07:00 AM - 1.5 Cups Oatmeal (Nutrasweet and Cinimon to taste) 09:30 AM - Perfect Isopure (Low Carb) MRP 12:00 PM - 2 Cups of pulled Turkey Breast (Perhaps a grapefruit if im in the mood) 02:30 PM - Perfect Isopure (Low Carb) MRP 05:00 PM - 1 Meat(Turkey,Shrip or Chicken), One Carb(brown rice or potato), A veggie (asparagus or peas) 07:30 PM - Perfect Isopure (Low Carb) MRP My Overall Intake Looks Like This Cals : 1650 Protein : 220 Grams 57 % Fat : 30 Grams 8 % Carbs : 135 Grams 35 % Of cource there is a MAJOR calorie deficet in my diet but I eat frequently enough to keep my blood sugar up and prevent my body from going into "starvation mode". On average Im loosing about 2.5 lbs of weight per week and have seen visible gains in muscle definition, so, although im not 100% sure, I dont think any of the weight is muscle loss but I could be wrong. This is just my 2 cents. If anyone else cares to correct me, by all means please do so. |

That looks like a great diet, but i would recommend on you to be getting about 1800-2000 calories each day. For a grown person like you you should be getting 3000-4000 and if you split that and get 2000 calories each day i think your diet would be perfect ;)

well hers the jest if you wanan bulk up, your going to look biggerie. if you build muscle under fat your going to look liek and NFL line man............if you liek that go right a head............if you work out, watch what you eat, and do a lil cardio......and keep your calories the same not trying to loose weight or gain weight...... you will start to tone up as you build muscle..............when I started workingout I was 275 at like 29 % body fat and I could bench only 155 squat 185 and clean 135, deadlift 200................then I got serious and lost to about 215 on the adkins diet..... I was misserable I felt weak and looked weak......my maxes wherea lil higher but thats it...............then I gained weight back about to 280+ lbs then i started working out, reading about dieting and got super serious, I watched what I ate, looked at how i was working out, changed my form................And now i'm almost 250lbs and i have 18% body fat and my maxes are double what they where in high school.............and i didn't cut caloties,,,, I don't do a " bulk" phase.....nor " cut phase" I just work out and watch, an di slowly loose body fat through the addition of muscle mass, which burns more calories........ -------------- ---andrew.......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records!
