I had a really physically intensive job as a forest ranger and now I'm sitting behind a desk for the last year and I just don't feel right so I realize I need to start a gym plan but am out of shape and 20lbs heavier. so any advice what my first steps should be. I've been hesitant because I want to make a change that will be long lasting and realistic.

Zoreena, welcome to FT. Pick a beginners level workout routine here and get started. Thats the best way. There are home and gym plans available as well as a large number of like minded people to encourage you. Start slowly and don't hurt yourself Give it time and soon you won't be able to live without it.

By the way, why give up Bambi, Thumper and Yogi for a desk job? In my years I have found forest rangers to be wonderful people with great jobs.

Good luck, Charlie

Zoreena,

First off, I'll agree with Charlie - get back outside! Second, if you do have to stay indoors for work, that doesn't mean that you can't get outside for recreation. As you've already seen, the difference in your daily activity has an effect on your level of fitness - and that's just generally speaking. A structured exercise program is something else altogether.

You do need to start slow, though. Your body needs time to get prepared for the intensities of exercise. If you jump too far too fast, you'll just get hurt, and probably also too discouraged to continue making the effort.

Get started on some general body weight activities first, and a good stretching program, as well as some light to moderate cardiovascular activity. When you do get started on the weights, take it slow and be careful.

Welcome to ft Zoreena. Great job you have, had being a forest ranger. Charlie and Aaron have said it. However you could also go with the basic beginners program that would have you doing some weights lifting, I think. Go slow, keep up with the good eating habits, and add the cardo. Good luck on the goals.

Well thanks for your help. I got myself started just trying to work on my cardio first then will work into the gym. I feel better already even if its only been a week. it would be nice to be a forest ranger but to step up in the career gotta do some desk work. I finish my contract this april and am applying for park rangers now :) I do get out but its only on weekends -sometimes and not to the extent that I did before. My average day before was like a 20km hike with about 15lbs in my work vest on steep and flat terrain. thanks for the encouragement :)
