one of my favorite snacks is plain fat-free yogurt with vanilla protein powder and this low-fat almond rasin granola i buy at my organic foods store. i was very excited today because i bought these little containers that allow me to bring my snack to work. yay!
before i left my house i mixed everything into the container and packed it in my grocery bag with the rest of my food, all the while looking forward to eating it as my 1 a.m. snack (i work from 6-2. bleh.) when 1 finally rolled around i went to get my container and when i opened it, the granola was mushy. granola is not granola if the texture can be described as "mushy." needless to say, i am a tad on the sad side because i ruined my snack by pre-packing it. the take home message from my story is this: putting granola in yogurt for an extended period of time will produce the same result as putting cereal in milk. to avoid this problem, pack your granola in a seperate container to avoid finding yourself in my predicament. -------------- i wish you ill, ice-t. margarine is a liar who announces, "i am butter!" |

That snack sounds pretty good howdie. How healthy is the yogurt and the granola...is this a somewhat healthy cheat? I'm cutting right now and i;m thinking of incorporating this into my diet for some needed variety. thanks howdie

the granola is 190 cals, 2.5g/fat, 38g/carbs and 5g/protein for 1/2 cup. the yogurt is non-fat -- i'm not quite sure what the calories and carb counts are, but there are 12g/protein in 1 cup. the downside to the yogurt is the sugar content -- i think mine has 17g, but i've been searching for a lower-sugar variety. i forget to look every time i go to my whole foods store though.
this is the macro breakdown of how i mix mine: 392 cal 2.5g fat 58g carbs 33g protein i only use 1/2 scoop of my protein powder so you can up the protein content really easily without messing up the rest of the macros too much. -------------- i wish you ill, ice-t. margarine is a liar who announces, "i am butter!" |

most of the sugar is the galactose in the milk, not added sugar.

Thanks howdie for the macro breakdown. So what exactly is the galactose..bad,good,neither? Does it not give you a spike?

howdie, you gorgeous young thang you! You look yummier than the yogurt right now. :P I just miss everyone I guess.
Anywhoo...I love yogurt, but I don't ever prepack it. It takes the fun away from all that granola. -------------- The only way to defeat fear is to treat it with respect. nah, I don't flatter ;) well yeah I do sometimes, but the picture deserved it, anyone will agree I'm sure.
which reminds me...i'm starving. if I don't get anything to eat in about fifteen minutes I'll probably roast my workmate alive. yogurt or yummy cheeseburger...yogurt...cheeseburger... yo...gurt..cheeeese...burger...why does life have to be so complicated??? :(:( -------------- The only way to defeat fear is to treat it with respect. Hey Howdie the Cascade Fresh non-fat yogurt has only 10g of surgar thats the lowest i could find. Assimer i found a bag of muesli in the granola isle is has granola dates raisins almonds and sunflower seeds. It taste awesome!! I suggest you try this out howdie found it at whole foods. it says on the package to mix with yogurt and let it sit for 5 min. or let it sit over night like the swis do. So is muesli just a mix of nuts and fruits or is when you mix granola with yogurt until it's mushy?

i found that cascade frest yogurt -- i didn't get any yet because i had just bought a quart of some other yogurt, but i'm going to give it a shot when i run out. thanks for keeping an eye out :) maybe muesli is designed to get mushy fast. i'm not really sure as i have no (intended) experience with it. i bet that stuff you found tastes great though. i'll try it on my next trip.
oh, and i found this organic pasta mix -- annie's something or other -- i had the tomato herb before i went to work tonight and it was quite tasty. i have a parmesan mix as well that i think i'm going to eat with tuna. this has nothing to do with granola, but i found it at whole foods so...hooray for whole foods. |
