Trans fats started in reality just before World War 1. There was an overabundance of cheap vegetable oils and fish oils. They had an extremely difficult time selling them because they went rancid very quickly.
Looking into ways to improve the length of time these oils could be kept, in 1912 the process of hydrogenation was conceived. They found by the boiling of the oils at high temperatures for hours on end, under hydrogen gas and in the precense of a nickel catalyst, the oils turned to fats. They solidified, thus making them easier to store and less prone of course to turn rancid. In the USA it was mostly mostly vegetable oils used. By 1920, not surprisingly, after only 8 yrs. Of the public consumption of this stuff, coronary artery disease started to escalate. Today, Trans fats make up about 5% of all dietary fat in the USA. In most processed foods like cookies, pastries, and French fries, trans fats make up generally over 10% of the total fat content!! In margarine, the TF content is often over 10%….and in some brands as high as 60%!!!!!! Is it any wonder that epidemiological studies show that an increased consumption of trans fat from hydrogenated oils is linked to an up to 66% increase in the risk of coronary artery disease??? They compete with normal fats in the body for enzymes. They lead to an increase in LDL cholesterol, increase triglycerides, and on to of that they also interfere with the bodys ability to metabolize poly unsaturated oils such as fish oils. They can in fact make a PUFA depletion(if you aren’t getting enough as it is in your diet) worse, leading to an increased susceptibility to inflamation in the artery walls and elsewhere.:love: Some other health related problems thought to stem from trans fats include a loss of skin pliability, impaired brain function and nervous system function, increased tendency of asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. In conclusion, learn to read labels. If you have to sit down to read the list of ingredients on a package, chances are it is over processed and containing trans fats. Read labels carefully and protect yourself. This stuff is a killer. The diseases do not happen immediately, they happen over time with an impaired immune system from constant bombardment of free radicals. Folks, very few of us die of old age, we die of some disease that can be prevented. They may call it a natural disease, but in fact most stem from a lifetime of bad nutritional choices. It always amazes me that with all of the food regulating bodies out there such as the FDA and others, our foods are more toxicc than ever. Drink unpasteurized milk? - Dont you dare! - have some olestra soaked potato chips instead. Yesiree, Big Brother is sure looking out for you. :surprised: |

Heres another important fact about Hydrogenated Oils:
A fat cell consists of two "ends". One of these ends is used to attach to your cellular wall as fat, while the other end hangs freely. Your body takes this loose end and uses it to convert the entire cell into energy. When you Hydrogenate a fat the loose end has a hydrogen atom attach to it. This actually prevents out bodies from converting the cell into energy. So a hydrogenated fat can still stick to your wall like a normal fat, but your body can NEVER burn it! Hows that for a scary: Food that makes you fat, forever! (Well not forever. Supposedly it takes anywhere from 2-3 years for your body to regenerate a cell wall anyways) -------------- - Its never about how much you can lift, or how many reps you do. Its just about doing it, and doing it right. - If your hungry all the time, your not eating enough. And anyways, being hungry sucks. ~Brad~ |

Good post....yep, our food chain is killing more of us than any other thing folks. As I stated, these diseases they call "normal" now are not! Very few of us live our biological life span. These diseases so common mostly stem from poor dietary decisions over years. If you care to think of it this way, by the time many of us are 40, we can actually be called "pre ill"! Think about it, if the rate of decay(bombardment of free radicals day after day from poor dietary decisions) is only a little faster than the rate of repair, there will be a net loss of healthy tissue, in fact a pre illness growing little by little every day until the clinical illness finally emerges. Nutrition cannot be emphasized enough in preventing these "diseases" from ever getting a foothold.

We just learned about these oils in class and it is amazing to me that the FDA can ok these sort of substances but when it comes to weight lifting and fitness they are so quick to jump on creatine, ephedra and various others suplements. What is fair about this?

Thats a really good point. They are always looking for ways to ban supplements in one form or another, but seem to look the other way when it comes to foods that make the population obese.-------------- - Its never about how much you can lift, or how many reps you do. It depends. All natural peanut butter (the ingredients should be ONLY peanuts) do not contain it. Peanut butter that does not seperate will contain it.
As for 'a lot', I don't know. All I know is if the ingredient lists contains any "Hydrogenated Oil" or "Partially Hydrogenated Oil" or "Shortening" I throw it back on the shelf without a second thought. That stuff has no benifit at all to your health. -------------- - Its never about how much you can lift, or how many reps you do.
