I am now into my 2nd week of Weight Loss and Toning. I am following the plan laid out by Freetrainers.com. I am 40 years old, 6'1" and 205 lbs. I lift weights 3 days a week and do 45 min. of Cardio/FatBurn training on my off days.
I am amazed at how weak I am! I mean with DumbBells I can only work with 10 - 20lbs of weight when doing say Inclined Presses...etc. Usually my Arm ,Shoulder and Chest day on Mondays are my hardest sets...I really get fatigued, but continue to complete each set and rep as stated on my printed Workout List. Chin Ups are a joke. Maybe 2 or 3 if luckly. I usually use the Chin Up Machine with Counter Weights to assist me... just so I can do my required sets! I HATED weight class in jr. high school cause I was tall and skinny... so going to the gym at all is a miracle for me. Now that I am older and stockier... people think I am stronger... but I am just freaked at how little weight I can man handle! When does it get better? Darren in KC |

it gets better when you give it time and consistancy and not worry things can only go up( ur weights ) and when it goes down (weight) break off n re-arrange your workouts another words u can only get stronger each n every workout so just give urself some time to get into it n ull b fine

timmstar's right - don't try to rush too quickly through your work-out. keep the movements slow and controlled - you'll feel it better. you will start to see little improvements and it'll give you a buzz. keep at it and good luck.

I had to giggle when I read your post because I share the same feelings when it comes to my upper body.
I can barely do all my sets with these little, light weights and it doesn't help that they are pink and yellow as if to say, "you are weak and don't deserve the valiant cast of grey that all the other dumbells have." It also doesn't help that there are people beside me that are gunning huge plates of iron either.:surprised: But, I have noticed that no matter how light the weight, it still works. I don't imagine I could be any less sore than anyone else, because my muscles are working just as hard. Keep that in mind and will yourself to stick to it until you are at the top of the hill! Julienne,
LMAO!:laugh: I did notice I was able to increase some of my routine 5 - 10 lbs. today! Today I cowered to the Bench Press though. I knew it was gonna come up in my FT routine sooner or later. I loaded the bar with a pair of 50lb. weights and mustered thru about six reps... dropped to 40 lbs. and knocked out another eight reps. I figured this was not truly benefiting me as my technique was poor and I was not completed my required sets. I switched to a Chest Press machine and finished my required sets/reps. I felt better, but I have always D R E A D E D the Bench Press. I remember in school the BP was how you were judged amoungst my peers. " Dude, I can bench 235!" if you was a jock! With me it was, uh...what bench press?' Darren in KC |

Do not forget diet. Getting weaker during workouts can also be caused by not eating enough. Do as you have heard here. Workout consistently and you'll be amazed by your results as you look back. Do not fear the bench press! It is no one elses business what you do. I remember loading the bench with 25's on each side. It was embarrassing, but I learned to ignore what I saw. The freeweights are going to benefit you more than the machine. Changing between the machine and the bench press once in a while is fine. Just do not cut out the bench press all together.-------------- Seeking out motivation does not motivate you to seek out results. - Paul Post mark - AugustWW - Post mark |

To add, go with a low enough weight that you can learn the technique comfortably on the bench press. Move up slowly until you get the hang of it. You'll do great! Good luck! :)-------------- Seeking out motivation does not motivate you to seek out results. - Paul Post mark - AugustWW - Post mark |

Yeah the bench press is a little intimidating for me. I'm am by no means weak, but my bench press weight is not very high. I go to the college gym and see these guys start off with two 45's, then add 25's, then add 45's and its pretty crazy. Then I get on there and load on two 35's, then 45's, then maybe add another couple 5 pounders. But the thing is, most of the guys either get on there and do 4 reps, or they have spotters who do most of the work after the 1st rep. So don't be so mindful of your weight because most of the time you're looking (and sometimes laughing) at the guy with more weight because it looks so ridiculous. I especially love when they bring the weight down 7 inches AWAY from their chest and then bring it back up...its good entertainment haha
