I got a new barbell set today...my old set...maxed out at 55lbs with the bar...I was beyond it in my DL so today I went to get a "standard" bar...but that was still to heavy...so I got a 10 lb bar with 100lbs of weight...got it home and together put 60 lbs on it...all smiles...8 reps...no problem...added 10 lbs...8 reps...a little difficult...80 lbs...6 reps rough..but could be done in good form...so I said what the f***...put the whole 100 lbs on there...6 reps good form..after that 6th rep I dropped it and felt like a real power lifter...was awsome.


I know to you guys 110 lbs w/ the bar isn't squat...but I started at 20 lbs...I'm thrilled....

that's awesome kc. being able to pull over 100 pounds off the floor 6 times is nothing to scoff at. you'll be hitting 200 in no time!

Listen to what you just said... You just said that picking up 100lbs off the ground "isn't squat". 100lbs. How many other women do you know that can say that?

you can easily do 135lb for reps....standard olympic bar +45s ....

nahhhhh....gonna keep it a bit...it doubles as DB too...and I really needed more weight for that...besides...when I got the thing home I told my husband I wanted to take it in the house...if I was gonna be lifting it...I needed to get it in the house on my own...and I couldn't get the box out of the trunck...so I needed help with that...but walked it all the way to my room on my own...so it's already beaten me a little...I need to keep it around...show it who mama is...:big_smile:

That's some progress, KC! I'm proud of you. Do you have straps? I find my grip gives out on the SLDL's before anything. Straps make all the difference for me...i.e., am able to do 12 reps vs. 6 (but that's only 85 lbs. not 110!)

No not the one in march too soo but yes I will be there. Straps are not allowed use a "over under grip" Right hadn faces your body, left faces away or some combo like that.

OK...you all have my attention...Iwill miss my triatholon because of injury...so this sounds GREAT....


what are requirements to compete...is there a certain amount of weight you have to be able to do...I'm in completely new territory here guys...

A power lift meet is done from 3 lifts. bench press, squat and deadlift. Each lifter gets a certain number of tried to get each lift done right. there are requriements for each lift (how deep time etc) I am sure steve can shed mor elight onit. You win by getting the biggest total of the three lifts for you weight group

This sounds pretty dang interesting however March is too close for me I think. Before all this I used to be able to do 150lbs on my DL, last time I tried it was down to 80lbs, but I am sure I could bring that up easily.

KC that is excellent progress!! You are doing awesome and I know what a high feeling that is to be able to accomplish something like that, especially coming from a cardio bunny as yourself, i was heavy into running before joining FT and learning there's more to fitness than cardio(years ago).

I don't know....I am sensing a challenge here with the women. KC I might have to try and compete with you, hell what does it hurt to try, right?

If all else fails, try and try again!

The powerlifting competition is sometime in March. I'll know exactly when after this weekend. Its a USAPL meet, so you can find rules at usapowerlifting.com. It will be a drug tested full meet, judged by IPF officials.

The strongman competition is set for May 12th. I'll post more details in the thread I started for anyone interested.

Damn another trip in March....I will be quite the frequent flyer it seems, Florida next week, Vegas in April & possibly another trip sooner, Delaware in May, Massachussetts in June, California in June and now this...

KC, if I cannot make it up there, I will find a way for us to compete or train together whether it be me having someone photograph me doing the DL's o what have you.

Oh and ummmm... it will be one hell of a competition then, because I don't just like to win, I WIN! hehe

This all sounds rather interesting....I've been thinking of changing things up a bit for the remainder of the winter/spring before I start training for my Tri's in the summer. Hey, if nothing else, maybe it'll help me reach my goal of 1 unnasisted chin up! I'm not ready to compete, although I just may make the 3hr drive to Rochester for the meet, just to see how it all works and to check out the guys:).
So Powerlifters, I guess as a very basic starting point...low reps, high wt focussing on big lifting moves?? 1 day wts followed by 1 day rest?? Anyone want to post some basic starting points for us ladies??

I woudl suggest reading a bit in this forum on westside routines. Going to http://www.elitefts.com/ and reading there. You will want to start very light and get used to the exercises.....mostly you will focus your training on building your weak areas up for each of the three main lifts. Bench-triceps, lats, shoulders Squat-hammies, quads, lower and upper back. DL well the grip and lower back and hammies. You will do the three lifts but more oft will focus on exercises that help in doing them.

Pemdas is competiting as well. At least from what he has told me in person...

I'll throw something together tonight, an intro to powerlifting thread. I'll throw together a template while I'm at it.

I wouldn't put beginner powerlifters on westside, but mutt is right that EFS is an excellent resource.

Straps are not allowed? I have used the grip you're talking about...that doesn't keep my grip from giving out. This is the only excerise I use the straps for and it was the only way I could bump the weight up from 65 lbs. Since the exercise is for hamstrings and has nothing to do with training my upper body, who cares if I use straps? I'd rather straps than drop the bar.

Im some federations for competitions straps are not allowed. I used to use them as well. In one month I went from barely holding 315 for reps to hitting 405. Now when shrugging over 600lbs I donot use them either. Just chalk. However if you are not competeing then by allmens use them.
