This is a bit of an embarrassing problem, and I think its a result of my new diet... Its making me constipated. Yeah I know, nothing anybody wants to hear about... But I am not sure what to do.

I've tried compensating by eatting All Bran ceral in the moring, and even drinking a glass of metamucil in the evening. I am not sure if I eat enough ruffage, but I usually eat a salad and at least a couple fruits each day. Nothing seems to work.

Should my diet be doing this to me? Am I eatting to much meat? Any advice would be appriciated.

Have fibrous veggies at each meal. Also add some flax seed(not oil). Flax seed not crushed or ground is great fiber and a good laxative.

Could you give me some examples of fibrous vegetables?

Should I add the flax seed to my cooking (like my chicken or tuna salads). Could I add it to my Whey shake I have before bed or would that just make it difficult to drink?

Thanks

Not totally uncommon with starting a new diet. BB1 is right. Another thing you need to look at is your water intake. If you're not taking in enough water, you can easily get bound up.

I drink plenty of water each day. Probably about 3-4 litres.

I'm going to pick up some flax seed today on the way back from the gym. Hopefully that clears me up...

The flax seed can be done in a variety of ways. For instance, I sprinkle a tbsp. on my cottage cheese before bed. You can put a tbsp. in with your salad, will give a nutty crunchy feel. Or, you can just take a tpsp. by itself. I also use it in my cardio recovery shakes, throw a tbsp. in the blender with your protein and a tbsp. of flax oil.

I've heard alot about flax seed on the boards. Are they like nuts, sunflower seeds, etc? Also my problem not so much constipation but excessive gas. Now that's embarrassing. Especially if your going for that last rep. Has to do with fiber.

Somedays the gas alone is enough to make me want to give up. I am really tired of it. And the whey gives me the opposite problem as borp's. I'm tired of that too.

Is it beneficial to add flax seed to your diet. I have had to cut back on the fats due to high cholesterol. But my C has been good for about 6 months though. My last test showed low HDL so I've been looking for something to give it a boost. Maybe the flax seed?

My suggestions are celery with every meal, and if that doesn't work, pepto bismal.

You want to talk about bad gas? Ever since I've become constipated its been horrible! I'm afraid I am going to drop the bomb at the gym and they are going to kick me out they smell so rotten! Hehe.

I got the flax and tried cooking it in with my eggs in the morning. Its actually pretty tasty. Hopefully this clears me up.

Thanks for the advice.

Victoria - ever since I switched from whey powder to soy powder (w/soy milk) my gas has gotten SOOOOO much better. I mean, I still have to have small portions of things like beans & dairy, but the switch to soy has made the "everyday" gas almost disappear! :)

Nothing to say about the constipation...I usually have the opposite problem!

I started out with the soy, but was steered by the posts here about whey protein, to go that way. And all the cottage cheese, yogurt and high fiber cereals doesn't help either. I am leaning towards weeding out some of these and finding 'gas friendlier' options. Thanks Kirby.

One thought, an inferior whey protein source will produce bloating and gas. Cheapest is not always best. You may just have to get some digestive enzymes, they can be purchased very cheaply at any health food store.

bb1-I have been using the Optimum Nutrition Natural 100% Whey. I purchased it at netrition.com. It was very economical (cheap) 5lbs for $30.00. Tastes good. My question-I take about 3 scoops 3 times per day to supplement my diet. One serving I take with skim milk the other 2 with water. Not knowing much about this type of protein, will it do the trick or could you suggest another.

The ONN 100% whey is best suited for cooking. It is virtually tasteless, and is manufactured especially for cooking. Most wheys denature under intense heat very quickly, this one does not.(or so they say)

I've not tried cooking with it. It has a chocolate flavor and I have just been drinking it. It says 100% whey but on the label there is some kind of formula that indicates 70% protein. The label says 22 grams per serving. I realize the improtance of protein and I pretty much have to supplement to meet my requirements but there is so much out there it really confuses me. The more I search the more confused I get. I appreciate your response. Thanks
