As long as you are doing the push-ups properly, keep doing them. Doing any exercise to failure is what you want. You will get stronger and eventually be able to do more. Try doing forced reps. Pause for a few seconds when you find yourself at failure and push out a few more reps.

Good luck and welcome to freetrainers!

As Paul said...keep doing them. I was the same way....but now that I have been doing martial arts about 3-4 hours a week we are forced to push through...and even do them on knuckles....I can do them now. :) You will too :)

i'm poor at 'em too but it's only a matter of practise. if you don't do them you never get better.. a magazine here in the uk stated that the average uk man weighs 82 kilos has a 13'' bicep, 36'' waist, 20.4'' leg/quad, 41'' chest and does 27 press ups on the trot.

So i'm 79 kilos, 15'' bicep, 35'' waist, 44 1/2'' chest, 23.5'' leg/quad and can only do 20 push ups(but not as a habit) I'm best at leg presses/ext/curls so maybe I should try for 27 to be average and then some more...

So just do your best if it's 12 then hey great , do another 12 and again try to do 10 more and get a 3 minute rest in between - do it every 3 days and try to do an extra one or two each session.. by the end of the month you will turn 12 into 20, another month and 20 into 28 and then 36... believe in your mind power- you know you can do anything you want to with little inches of progress

10 weeks ago I couldn't do any push ups, 8 weeks ago I could do 1 and now I can do 8 in a row!
Just stick with it and you will get better :)

How are you doing them? How are your hands placed? I actually found I can do more on my knuckles and with my hands inline with my body. Let your arms bend inline with your body instead of perpendicular. Maybe that will help?
