There is a difference between maxing out and going to failure. You want to go to failure. Maxing out will only cause injury for you and anyone else who does it regardless of age....

This is kris/17/male/ny and I don't know a lot, but I know the basics to weight lifting, you shouldn't just go to the gym and try you max right away, you have to work out and make them bigger and get a greater body mass, meaning do excercizes every day like push ups, bench press, etc.and if you don't have a work out plan just take a look at this site and they will show you a couple things to do with the chest. The worst thing about that is if you keep doing that, you can stretch a muscle in the chest area and you will be hurting for weeks, trust me I have done that once and you really don't want that to happen. Give it a month then you max every month, you work at your chest, tricep, and most of the arm's muscles. You'll be able to max out more and more, trust me I know, I love weight lifting, but my only problem is that I go to much to the gym and I go every day except one day out of the week, which get tiring but I relax and sleep a lot so I can catch up with my weight lifting.
So what I'm trying to say is you shouldn't go down there and just max to show off for your friends or something, you should go to the gym for your self and weight lift with one of your partners that is about the same size as you and don't try to show off. Try to get body mass and I will garentee you will improve your max for sure.

Maxing out is good so you know your progress. But a one rep max should only be done once eveery two to three months. Finishing off at the end of a workout with one rep isn't maxing, maxing is doing a warm up then lifting as heavy as you can for just one rep.

what good is 1 rep gona do...I thought that's power lifting...the last time i did a 1RM was years ago to determine the weight load by going 4 70% my rep max....I think a rep range of 6-8 is just fine.

Its good to do a one rep once in a whle to see if you improve in streength and to help improve in strength. even though your not powerlifting bodybuilders should be strong also as well as defined

Maxing Out is Okay but Restrict yourself to maxing out only 2days a week as your muscle needs time to recover after a max-out workout so that when you go next time you can workout with more intensity. And as for the growing up part be sure to stretch atleast 15 minutes before workout and after workout for 5 minutes so that you know that the weights you are using will not hamper your growth. Happy Working Out ByE
