mountain dew is pretty hardcore! i used to drink pop (yes, in chicago we say "pop") a lot when i was younger, then i switched to only drinking juice, and now i mostly drink water, so maybe just try doing it little by little, instead of having pop at lunch or dinner, drink juice instead or water. |

Why not try to get addicted to water?!!! lol a niiiiiice big glass of water with a lemon slice and ice cubes! Hmmmmmmm and ten times better for you than those sodas. You know it's bad anyway..... Don't you have light Mountain Dews? (we don't even have the "normal" ones here in France...) Light is still no good, but it's better than the real sugar ones..... (at least it doesn't give you such a huge insulin spike) -------------- - Nina :o) Les Victoires éternelles sont celles du coeur. |

Oh by the way, forget the fruit juice!!! It's just as bad. Plenty of sugar and no more vitamins left. Eat REAL fruit instead (and you'll get the fibres and vitamins!!)-------------- - Nina :o) Les Victoires éternelles sont celles du coeur. |

Like Nina said water with lemon or lime tast great and much better for you. As foe the Dew it rocks but it is one of the highest caffine laced pop outside of jolt soda. That could be a big part of your addiction is to the caffine. Good luck -------------- Never be afraid to try something new. You can do as I do, just buy fresh lemons or limes, and simply squeeze a quarter of one in your water.I have been doing it for years, even when I go out to restaraunts, that is what I get to drink. Water with lemon on the side. |

Yes, a lemon or lime slice in a glass of ice water is very refreshing. I've kicked my soda habit by doing this. |

A quick fact bout water which some might not like... A researcher is questioning the age-old advise to drink 8 glasses of water a day for optimal health. Dr. Heinz Valtin, professor emeritus of physiology at Dartmouth Medical School, says it's more urban myth than medical dogma and appears to lack scientific proof. In a report in the American Journal of Physiology, Valtin said there is no evidence of any health benefits of water guzzling. Infact the kidney specialist, said the calls to drink water -- made by everyone from health writers to nutritionists to doctors -- may have started with a misunderstanding of a guidelines by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council to drink 1 milliliter of water for each calorie of food consumed, or 2 to 2.5 quarts per day (64-80 ounces). But the next sentence, noting that "most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods," was overloked, and thus the water dictum was born. He finds it "difficult to believe that evolution left us with a chronic water deficit that needs to be compensated by forcing a high fluid intake." & says numerous studies suggest such large amounts are not needed. He points to published studies showing that caffeinated drinks, such as most coffee, tea and soft drinks, may be counted toward the daily total. Too much water can result in "water intoxication" if one's kidneys are unable to excrete enough urine. Such instances have led to mental confusion and even death in athletes, teenagers after ingesting the recreational drug Ecstasy and ordinary patients |

I would still tend to believe that people that consume high amounts of protein do need a lot of water, I think it has something to do with helping the kidneys process it... |

I am a soda addict myself and have changed over to diet soda. I have been told that this is just as bad for me, Is this true. I used to drink 4 sodas a day and was surprised at the amount of Carbs that they contain. I have recently dwindled down to two diet sodas a day. Will this be a disadvantage to my weight loss program? |

I dont think diet soda is bad, Their realy isnt anything in it except for flavored water. No reason for posting this other than I ran across it awhile back and thought it fit this topic. :) Aspartame article from Mayo Clinic Aspartame: What the body does with it Aspartame is a low-calorie sweetener composed of two amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine, and methanol (an alcohol). The amino acids are found naturally in milk, meat and dried beans. Methanol is a natural component of fruits and vegetables. After consuming food or drink containing aspartame, the body breaks down the sweetener into its various components. So aspartame itself no longer exists and never enters the blood stream. The amino acids and methanol are then processed the same as if they'd come from foods. The amino acids are used by the body for building muscle or for energy. The methanol is converted into carbon dioxide and water. (Although methanol is an alcohol, foods sweetened with aspartame yield a very small amount of it. In fact, the amount of methanol that results from drinking a 12-ounce can of soda sweetened with aspartame is less than half that obtained from drinking an 8-ounce glass of fruit juice.) It's important to note that individuals with the genetic disease phenylketonuria (PKU) cannot properly utilize the amino acid phenylalanine. They must strictly limit their intake of foods containing this amino acid, such as meat, milk, nuts — and foods sweetened with aspartame. If a food contains aspartame, it will appear on the ingredient list on the product's label. The terms NutraSweet and Equal are brand names that also indicate the product contains aspartame. This is probably a no brainer, but if I have a bottle of water to sip on all day I drink more water than if I try to down a glass at a time - so at night I put a couple of bottles in the freezer with a little water in them. Then all I have to do in the morning is fill one up, drink it until it's about 2/3 gone, then put it back in the freezer and get another one. That way I have a nice chunk of ice in the bottle. I don't crave soda at all... coffee now... that's another story. :( |

It is not the sugar but the caffeine that you are addicted to. You just have to stop (cold turkey). The first day or two you will have a headache. This is a vascular headache in response to the adenosine receptors in your brain actually recieving adenosine and not being blocked by caffeine. Take some tylenol but don't take excedrine or anything else with caffeine in it. Drink alot of water, and chew gum. Good Luck.============ Quoting from EGchic207: I am addicted to SODA!!! (help!)
