ok, so then by your logic, since I don't "burn" anywhere, I don't have to weightlift at all to get stronger for sports??? Hmmmm.
doug, read the post that appeared maybe a week befor this one on baseball. That is why we didn't reply, because we had just finished answering this question. -------------- Yes I realize my shins are bleeding. And its called a deadlift. Any other questions??? If you smoke or don’t wear your seatbelt, please don’t tell me the deadlift is dangerous. |

When you throw a baseball for a long period of time you will start to feel which part of your body you are using? whatever part that is which is probably the triceps you should work them out dont jump to conclusions.

ok, so then your theory will lead to an injury, and its worse than what you were saying the first time.
Baseball players need to focus on the muscles that they aren't working in practice. Don't you think their throwing muscles get enough work during practice? They need to focus on balanceing out their other muscles. The triceps can only get so strong before the rest of the body starts to hold it back. Baseball players often follow your methodology, and they end up tearing a muscle or injuring their shoulder. Maybe you need to do your research before you accuse me of jumping to conclusions. Training what burns is an outdated training style, and it is ineffective. It leads to poor performance and injuries. -------------- If you smoke or don’t wear your seatbelt, please don’t tell me the deadlift is dangerous. ============ Quoting from 7707mutt: The squat cage is holy ground. ============ |

Wrong on two counts...
I don't go light enough to elicit a "burn". I am a powerlifter, and my weights are heavy that I usually dont get high enough reps to feel a burn. And your also wrong in training the parts of your body that get sore or burn when you practice. Read my above post. Athletes like baseball players need to not only strengthen the muscles they use in sport, but ESPECIALLY those they don't use, to prevent muscle imbalances and tendon abuse. Besides, burning is a horrible indicator of use. The burn you feel is usually felt in smaller muscles (biceps, forearm pump) because you can't move blood into those muscles as quickly when they are contracted or tight. However, legs need much more stimuli than your forearms before they feel this. This does not mean you aren't using them. In fact, when wrestling, my biceps would feel burned, but legs and posterior chain were probably the most used muscles. Your thinking makes sense in theory, but not practically. -------------- If you smoke or don’t wear your seatbelt, please don’t tell me the deadlift is dangerous. ============ Quoting from 7707mutt: The squat cage is holy ground. ============ |

This guy asks for a routine and RKO tells him to determine where the burn is. Great advice. Next time just tell him to get hit by a bus.

Baseball player programs are dependent on a few things. First are they pitcher or position player. If position, what position? A catcher's agility plan will be different then say a short stop. The lifting is similar all around. Olympic lifts are good if taught properly. squats, medball tosses, box jumps, hamstring work, groin work. A properly designed rotator cuff program with the appropriate progressions is a must for all baseball players. Baseball is a unique sport which for the most part involves alot of maximum efforts every time someone does something. I would try to train with rep schemes of 1-5 reps for main exercises working with 50-90% of your 1 rep max. The west side template can be modified for baseball.

I assisted with baseball when I was at Richmond in 2002 and Jim Roney had the pitchers do 3-5 board close grip bench in-season to take stress off of the shoulders. He had the entire team box squatting. The team did very well making it to the super regional. Not that it matters but I am a firm believer that the proof is in the pudding.
