Can you substitute fruit (bananas and pineapple) in your post-workout shake to create an insuline spike instead of maltose and dextrose? I'm planning on getting some soon, but just haven't had the opportunity yet. Can I use fruit instead?

You can, but just as an FYI, fructose is not that high on the GI scale; glucose being the top. But, by all means, do what it takes to get some simple sugars into you post-workout.

After I read that, it didn't sound that clear, so let me try again:

The GI scale is based on Glucose (at the top) rated at 100. Fructose is rated around 15, so it is much lower. However, many fruits have several other kinds of sugars in them, raising their individual GI much higher (50 or more!).

Hope that helps......

Use grape juice rather than real fruit....very high in dextrose. Fructose as mentioned is not very good, will top off liver glycogen, thus actually steering metabolic pathways away from muscle bulding. Liver glycogen is stored for a later use.

Hi, I'm wanting to have enough for an insulin spike too! Would some dried fruit work! Like rasins & dried pineapple there really sweet! I've been useing them in my protein shake! Would there be anything wrong with it? I also thought if it was o.k. to use, then it would give cobra93 another thing to try!
Thanks! Have a great day!

Thanks BB1! I would hate to spend all this time busting my butt in the gym only to impede muscle building! Looks like I'm taking a trip to the health food store tomorrow :)

Grape juice is next best, but try to get pure dextrose and maltodextrin if you can. It is much better and the two work together in unison for much better results. You can get both cheaply online at www.vitaglo.com or www.dpsnutrition.com. Dextrose is one product, the other, malto, is called Carbogain, both by Now nutrition. (easiest ones to get). You may also be able to find both at brew houses or your local health food store.

I am not shure how it will work for normal people but. Alpha lipoic acid 600mg will work as an insulin mimicker. This will help to shove thoose nutrients into the cells. ALA is also a potent anti oxidant that recycles vitamin c and E also.

Yes, you are correct. Make sure you use r-ALA, or you are wasting your money. A good doseage is 100 mg. per 30 gr. of carbs. It can help steer pathways for more glucose into muscle cells.

So, do you use malto and dextro as well as the r-ALA, or are they to be used separately, like when you only have access to one or the other?
