Hello,
My name is Nick, I am 17 and I am an advanced lifter. See my pics. I lift at 6:30 AM 5 days a week and usually drink coffee before my workout (otherwise empty stomach) and then get an insulin spike with some kind of juice afterwards. I am training very hard and am pretty well ripped but was wondering if I would have bigger gains (OR even if it would be helpful at all) to have a spike BEFORE I workout? I have read many times about the effects of an after workout spike but is a pre-workout spike good at all? Also, would it help to cut the spike and just have a protein shake (even though it doesn't promote a spike, or are there some that can?)
Thanks for all your help!

Insulin spike AFTER workouts to combat the cortisol your body produces from stressful training.

This can be beneficial, but you have to time it correctly. If you do not give your blood sugar a chance to "crash", it can be very productive. If training right as the blood sugar starts to surge, it cannot really due to normal blood sugar drops during training, and you can have a killer workout. Just beware and don't do this too much, it can/may greatly affect your insulin sensitivity and make you more insulin resistant, which will detract from your PWO shake which is of course your most anabolic time.

Dextrose would be a better option than Juice. Dextrose (glucose) is higher on the Carb (simple carb) Index and offers a better deliver system. Mix with your protein drink. Your PWO meal should be all-liquid then about an hour later you could eat a small meal. You can buy a 2lbs of dextrose for around 3.00USD.

I wouldn't use dextrose pre workout. If you are going to do an "insulin spike" pre workout make it milder. I have personally experimented with many things, large marshmallows for example. Timing this correctly can result in a killer workout, but I would not overdo it as I mentioned.
