Our friend BB1FIT has given us extensive information on insuline spikes, and if you don't get it by now, well...
Now, my only question for BB1 is: What is an adequate amount, in grams, to produce an insuline spike post-workout? I mix simple and complex carbs in my post workout meal. Actually, I lied, I have another question: When I'm carb depleting during competition training, I would assume one would still need an insuline spike. Should I still create an insuline spike with sugar intake even though I shouldn't be taking in any carbs at this point, or should I not worry about it because its only one time during the day?

Speaking of spikes.... Sometimes I wanna drive one in my head when you super guys start up with the jargon. BB1 and jdelts I really try to understand what you guys write but very often I just don't have the basics. Ever thought about putting up a nutritional and exercise glossary.
I can't be the only one out here who is reduced to eye spinning and lip diddling when you guys talk. The FT resources are great but basic. They don't begin to get into the depth and bredth of the level you guys are on. When I read bb1's journal I have to ask what half of the exercises are. I'm not as stupid as I look but sometimes I feel that way. LOL

When carb depleting would be the exception for the insulin spike. By carb depleting, I am assuming you mean the last week pre contest. As the name implies, you are carb depleting, and this means no simple carbs. Load up on BCAA's and glutamine.
And you will have to experiment with your amounts when you are doing this(spike). If you are trying to gain, a good protocol is 1/2 your bodyweight, divided evenly between dextrose and maltodextrin, and 1/2 bw in protein. Now, when starting dieting, cut this in half to start, and then adjust as needed from there. You need to keep this intact as long as possible, this will prevent too much catabolism and spare hard earned lean tissue at this time of tight calories.
And Charlie, we all have to learn. You make great posts and are learning. Keep up the good work, and never feel "stupid" asking a question. We all had to start somewhere, and if you don't ask, you will never learn, or learn very hard anyway.

One note here, when "cutting" as I mentioned, cut your amount in half, but just the simple carb portion. Keep the protein the same.

Now what sugars and how much sugar do you guys usually consume to spike your insulin levels after your workout?

Thanks BB1...yes, I meant the last week before the comp. Thankfully I knew when you said 'cutting' you meant the simple carbs and not the protien.
