for how long does muscle actually 'stay around'? Most muscle is permanent if you stick to a healthy diet (right?), but I heard that if you stop working out for a long while around 30% is reduced by your body. Is that true?

If you build muscles by working them harder and harder, and then stop working them as hard (or at all) your body has no reason to hang on to all that hungry muscle tissue. you can get into a maintainance phase, where you just keep doing the same weights and hold onto the muscle you have (as long as you eat to support it). But what fun would that be?

Everything will disappear if you don't maintain its engine.......
Just like a car....... you need to make it drive once in a while to keep it working!

The grown muscle is your body's evolved reaction to undue stresses--i.e., lifting weights. It attempts to adapt to stimuli so as to prosper. Lose the stimuli, and your body loses the reason to adapt. It goes back to normal.

The exception is muscle memory, which has been posited to be the result of stretching the wrapping bands around the muscles--which are hard to stretch, but must be stretched if you want a bodybuilder's physique. Once you've stretched them though, they don't go back to normal, so you are able, in the future, to grow up to the point of earlier gains within a short time, after a long layoff. For a program to stretch these bands, and bigtime growth overall, check out the Anabolic Burst Cycle program. Talk about stressing the body to get what you want from it . . .

I wish it were permanent. It can disappear if you don't maintain it. But it is easier to maintain once you have it.
