The other day at the gym I overheard a converstaion where the guy said to the other that you shouldn't eat carbs after a workout because then that is what your muscles will use up to rebuild itself, resulting in jiggly(not firm) muscles. He said he eats chicken and vegetables after working out, no carbs at all like rice or anything like that. I have a feeling this is not true, but he DID have pretty big muscles himself so maybe he knows something I don't. But I trust all of you more than that guy so I am turning to you for the REAL info! So, only protein and fibrous veggies after a workout or are carbs allowed too? (I've been loading up on good carbs after my workouts cuz that's what I always craved!)

I am no expert but I am betting that the majority will say good carbs are fine.

after my workout i have 1.5 scoops of pro complex protien and 1/2 cup of pure maltodextrin, which is a carb, to get my insulin spiked to keep my muscle from breaking down. then a little while after that i eat a balanced meal.
spiking your insulin is the most anabolic thing you can do for your muscles. it will not make them "jiggly" as the guy at your gym said. there are a lot of posts on the site for getting information about this. also, you can go to the sites below to look at a 2 part series about post workout nutrition that i found to be very helpful.

hope this helps you out a little!

Hey diana, next time you see this gym "guru", go ahead and throw a dumbell at his head, then eat a big plate of chicken and rice for having exerted yourself.. You need your carbs after a workout period. Just because somebody has big muscles means nothing.

Diana noooooo! You need simple carbs after you workout, like Howdiekat suggested, to spike your insuline so as to wipe out dangerous cortisol which eats away at muscle tissue. These are facts and I wouldn't be surprised if "Mr. Guru" was a JUICE-HEAD.:dumbbell:

I read somewhere that a postworkout drink/snack of ratio 3carb:1protein was optimal, probably for above reasons

LoL,Dahayz, I will defidently consider throwing a dumbell at his head, I just hope it won't bounce off and hurt someone. He probably is a juice head; i saw him today too at the gym and he was acting all macho and loud.Annoying! But thanks for the GOOD info; i will defidently think twice before accepting any info as true that I hear in the gym, especially from these guys. Now I'm gonna go spike my insulin as I just got home from the gym (it was leg/butt day...an I already feel the pain!!) and I am HUNGRY!!! Thanks again!
