It is best if you can do resistance training 2-3X per week along with some cardio 2-3X per week. Ideally you would do your resistance training and cardio on different days. Make sure you have 1 full rest day per week.

If you have done nothing before, and you keep a good diet, you will see benefits. As you progress, you may want to think about a bit more as fly says.

??? Then why did you ask?
5 times a week can be too much, depending on your experience.
how long have you been training?
Do you stick to mainly compound movements?
What results are you looking for?

i was asking if my ab workout 2 days a week is enough. i have been working out for about 6 months. but i have never had a chance to have people who know what they are doing help me out. i am really trying to get back down to my original weight and get toned so that i am not embarassed to be seen in a bathing siut. for the most part i do my cardio on the eliptical machine for 30-35 min. before i do my weight training. i really appreciate all your advice. thanks.

You didn't specify that it was abs you were asking about.
Abs are good every other workout, switch it up alternating endurance type routines and heavier exercises with less reps. twice a week might be enough if you are very core conscious the rest of your workouts - sometimes I use my abs so much during my weightlifting that they are sore without ever being directly worked. Every exercise is a chance to work on core stabilization. Think about pulling your abs in like a strong belt around your midsection - not so tight that you can't breath, but feel the support they give you.
Switch up your cardio both type and intensity for more results - if you don't already do it, look up HIIT and try throwing that in once a week in place of steady state cardio.
Your diet will be a large part of your results, if you want it to happen faster you need to be eating the right way.
