bb makes another excellent point. The food pyramid is nothing if not dangerous. I would not feed my dog based on those recommendations. Although I do not have a dog.
I'm not sure that even when they change it that the American public will understand it or be able to moderate their behavior. -------------- Anni ******* Hard work must have killed somebody |

Isn't it wierd that America is one of the "fattest" countries in the world, but it seems like EVERYBODY is excercising, losing weight... Especially the Atkins diet.. (buncha hooey). Wierd stuff.

Tres bien, Emily!
This is a good question, why are American's so fat? When I think back over the last 20 years I can come up with at least one change that has probably had as profound an effect on our eating habits as anything. When I was a young bride in 1982, my husband and I were very poor like most newlyweds. We rented an apartment in a neighborhood that we could afford and so most everyone was poor like us. On the next block over there was a tiny little grocery store, run by an elderly couple who also lived in the neighborhood. On the front door was a little note that said, "Don't buy more than you can carry home." In this little store you could buy one stick of butter at a time. Or you could see the Mr. who worked the butcher counter at the back of the store. He would happily sell you only what you needed, even if it was just one slice of bologna and a few pieces of bread from the loaf he kept open for emergencies. No child went to school without a sandwich, and for only 25 cents. Nobody bought more than they could carry or more than they needed. I think it was the right way to do things. How's that for a "back in the day" story? -------------- Anni ******* Hard work must have killed somebody |

Let's see... where do I start... Nintendo, Playstation, PC's, cable... the list could go on... now I'm not saying these things are evil... nope... I think they have their place in society, balanced with a healthy lifestyle.
Kids today are becoming more and more obese... I remember when I was small, we would or run around outside playing football or soccer or whatever... that was the social life of a kid. Now it's 'come to my house and try the new game I've got for my X-Box! While we're at it, let's eat a bag of Dorito's!!' I'm happy we don't have cable.... two channels... and a third if you mess with the rabbit ears... we don't own a Game Cube or any of that, however we do have a couple of computers... and we limit their time on them... my kids are active... always running around outside... just about the only ones too... If we're not careful, our sedentary kids will turn into sedentary adults and the life expectancy will drop to 35 again... That's my rant for all it's worth... t -------------- Tim I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies, for the hardest victory is over self. - Aristotle You have the power to change a life right in your own hands. - Paul Brandt |

Sedentary lifestyles are a big issue, but I think anni hit it right on the head with the "portion size" issue. Especially while dining out of the home. What country were you in for that story?? No way it was here in the states. -------------- A broken clock is right twice a day |

Another tool for thought....Could it be coincidence that since the USDA food pyramid was publicly acknowleged, obesity has skyrocketed?
The USDA Food Guide Pyramid recommends 6 to 11 servings per day from the grain group: bread, cereal, rice and pasta. The maximum recommended servings per day of fruits, vegetables and meats COMBINED is 12. Gee, do you suppose it's a coincidence that the trends in calorie intake exactly mirror the recommendations found in the pyramid? Eat plenty of bread, cereal and pasta, but go easy on the meats, fruits and vegetables, and what do you get? An obesity epidemic of epic proportion! -------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

As sad as it is to say, most of the American public is pretty dumb. When you give them information, true or false, they will most likely listen to it if the source is something like the USDA.-------------- A broken clock is right twice a day |

When I come to the States, I'm always surprised of your meal portion sizes........ :surprised:
They are HUUUUGE! Everything is a lot more sweet as well, your drinks, your ice creams, your bread..... I love your supermarkets though; you got EVERYTHING!!!! It's amazing! It takes an hour for me just to choose a piece of tofu  I like that you have so big a choice (that's not the case here in France! :( ) but one has to search a bit before finding the fruits and veggies.......... -------------- - Nina :o) Les Victoires éternelles sont celles du coeur. www.nme-pro.com |

I think the fast food industry with the supersizes and the "Buffet" all you can eat has played a huge part. Its to easy to just stop and pay 5 bucks for a 2000 calorie bigmac and all the soda we kids consume today now im 15 and i enjoy fastfood alot but i know my limits and i dont drink soda. I love how fast food places are starting to offer salads and that now. Mc Donalds and Burger Kind ect has lead American to be fat. And we are stupid enough to keep on eating there

Okay.. while McD's and BK have helped lead America/Canada to be 'fat,' I also think we as human beings have an equal part in leading North America to be fat... who in their right mind thought a four patty hamburger was a good thing to eat? I am guilty of that... I think Hec mentioned it somewhere... we all have choices... It was my choice to sit in a Wendy's, order a four patty burger, Biggie it and scarf it all down with about half a gallon of pop and a honkin' big load of deep fried potatoes... I feel ill now just thinking about it...
I still go to those places once in a while, but I make better choices when it comes to the meals.. sometimes a salad, never Biggie the meal, share the fries... stuff like that.. Yes, I agree, fast food joints have a responsibility to give us healthy choices, we as human beings have to take some of the responsibility for us turning into blobs and couch potatoes. You have two choices when it comes to health and fitness, you can be healthy and fit, or you can't... t -------------- Tim I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies, for the hardest victory is over self. - Aristotle You have the power to change a life right in your own hands. - Paul Brandt |

I need to vent. People are such suckers. You could tell someone that a pill will make them lose weight and they would jump all over it. If you told that same person that you could have them looking great within a year as long as they work hard and eat right, they would tell you to beat it. A year is not soon enough. We want it now now now!!!
So they take a pill that is not even regulated and they wash it down. I don't get it. I am sure people will say that it is easy for me to say because I have never been obese. They will have a point, I never have been obese, but I could be if I didn't decide to work hard everyday to mantain my health. I guess I just cant stand excuses. People literally blame McDonalds for them being fat. I guess it is easier to point fingers than to look in the mirror. -------------- Message deleted by moderator due to unsuitable content for this board. |

Someone once said "Hell look at this, people are sueing McDonalds for making them fat. If that's the case, i should sue hustler for giving me carpal tunnel syndrome in my wrist"
