Hi,
My name is Ted and I just joined the site. I'm 38 years old, 5 ft 7 and 205 lbs. I've been trying to lose weight and get in shape for about 1 year. It seems I've put on 30 lbs over the last two years and nothing seems to work to get it off. Hopefully I can get back in shape and start feeling better.
Looking forward to any tips, ideas and suggestions to get motivated.
Thanks,

Wecome to FT! What sorts of things have you tried in the past that didn't work for you? Why do you think they didn't work?

I've tried diets (i.e. Herbal Magic, Weight Watchers, Dr. Burstein, etc), "Reset Programs", and other quick fixes... but I've only gained more weight. Until a few years ago, I was working out at the gym or at home on a somewhat regular basis, but I just haven't kept it up. And my eating has gotten worse! Too many carbs and sugars.
These quick fix diets sometimes get quick results, but in the end you gain it all back ... and more.
So, I'm trying to go back to basics and see how this works out. My problem right now is motivation since it seems like a hugh battle. This is the heaviest weight I've ever been and I'm completely demotivated.
The best results I?ve had is when I hired a personal trainer for 3x per week and had a balanced eating plan. I hope I can find this on this site.

Well, as you can see the quick fixes ain't cuttin' it. Make a lifestyle change and drop the diets. Figure out how many calories you need and adjust from there.
Stick to a food plan and a workout plan and ask questions, do some research on here and enjoy.

What made you stop working with a trainer? Sounds like that was working for you. As far as your weight being a huge battle, it's not. Think of it like a test you might take in school. If you study diligently, you'll do well. If you slack of and let life distract you from what you need to do, you won't do well. Just get psyched and get commited. When I lift, I've got a song in my gym mix called "The Reason" by Hoobastank. There's a line in it that goes: I've found a reason to be better than I used to be, and the reason is you." It reminds me that I'm doing it for me. We are worth our best efforts, after all. We owe it to ourselves to be better.

Work got in the way... I was sent on assignment for 6 months out of the country and I just never got back to it. Since, I haven't been back to the gym (this was two years ago).

Hmmm. Okay, so work interrupted a routine that was working for you and things just sort of stalled afterwards? When you got back from assignment, did work stay permanently busier, or had you lost your grove and motivation and found lots of reasons not to give your trainer a call? Two years is a long time. What do you do for work?
