Well, as you can tell from the subject, I finally joined the "300 Club"! I pushed out 300lbs on flat bench earlier this morning. I tried 310lbs, but couldn't quite lock out. I even had my neighbor spot me this morning, mainly for a witness to what I could do. Just looking at me, you'd think I might be able to push 250lbs on flat bench, tops.
I haven't maxed out on bench since college (1995) when I was in the best shape of my life. I put up 280lbs in college and I beat that with 285lbs on my 7th set last Saturday. So, I decided to see what my all-out max would be. I am definately gaining strength, and although I am getting a bit bigger, its not as much mass as I want. Still, I am VERY happy about pushing out 300lbs.

that's good. was that because of joining FT?
I'm kind of different in bench presses. If tou look at me you think I can do up to 220lb, but I can do a max. of 150lb. in squats however, it's different, I squat 250lb now I seem to be on my way up.

Thanks, guys. I'm psyched about being able to put up that much weight. My weight varies slightly from morning to morning, but usually falls between 189 and 191. Still looking for more mass, thogh. I'll be honest, I haven't tried a FT workout yet. I just take my existing workout, alter it to fit my needs, and go from there. I think my program is a good solid foundation and I just keep altering it for a change here and there. Lift heavy every workout (up to 80% of my one-rep max on my working sets); lower reps (1-4 reps on last 4-6 sets); high sets (7-10 per power excercise) - thats my secret. As for supplements that may have helped.... maybe creatine, but my high-protein diet and constistant routine have been the best thing for me so far. Check out the "Modern Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding" by Arnold. That's the BEST book ever written. I use a lot of his techniques, and they're working great so far!

Just another question after reviewing your statement. Is that 300 over your weight or did you bench press 300 lbs total?

Hey man, thats great that your in the 300 club. How much over your weight it that? I'm almost a proud member of the 250 club. We max out Monday. But the unique thing is...I'm a freshman is high school.(15 years old) I'm proud of my improvements. Currently im benchin 240 max that was monday. Now im hopin for 250 but thats an extreme difference in a week. Im at 70 over my weight. Good job on your achievement. :)

I had originally posted this back in September 2001. I plan on attempting more than 300 within the next couple months. I hoping for 330, but that may be just a dream......

Yes, I meant the 30 club (thirty). Can someone explain this to me? When I was using the chest press machine, I could press up to 90 pounds(doing reps, not 1rm), but when I switched to free weights, I can't hardly press anything. Ideas?

any movement with free weights is much more difficult than on a machine, and for a couple of reasons.

first is the simple physics behind it. when using free weights, you are actually moving that poundage vs. gravity. with machines, however, you can be using what's called a "simple machine," namely, a pulley (such as with cables), or a lever (as in a stack machine). with these, you are no longer lifting the weight in direct resistance to gravity, but with a machine in between, and that makes it a little easier.

the second reason are the muscles involved. lets take the bench, for example. on a machine, you are pressing in a strictly linear movement; you only need to push mostly with your pecs, with some assistance from the tri's, lats, and delts. with free weights, though, your body now has to fight the twisting motion of the bar (to keep the bar from going too far over head or onto your hips), as well as the pushing up movement. so now, more muscle and connective tissue (tendons, etc) groups are called into play, and your body has to deal with many more motions, including trying to keep the bar level between your arms!!

hope this helps..........Michael

Well said! I just got reminded on how much balance one needs when working with free weights...not to mention all the other muscles working to lift the weights!

Balance takes strength just compare dumbell bench pressing to barbell! I can only do about Half weight in total with dumbells!

I saw your new personal record posted, so I thought I'd bump this up to show you how far you've come.

Way to go!
