I'm going to attempt to talk to my boss today about the plans they have for after I have the baby. I am very very VERY nervous as it will pretty much be them letting me bring the baby into work, or me not working for 6 weeks. Keep fingers, toes, anything that can be crossed crossed for me k?!

Lonegirl, I don't get any maternity leave, and the company is too small to qualify for FMLA. So it really is either they let me bring the baby into work with me, or I am at home with no pay until he is old enough for daycare and I can go back to work/find another job. :(

Just wondering - did the employers not think that you would be out due to having a baby?

We haven't talked about it. I don't know what they would assume as I am the only person in the office(which is actually a studio apartment.) I would think they would assume I would want to take a few weeks off at least, but honestly we cannot afford that, so I am going to put out that I take a week or 2 off after the birth, and then come right back to work...if I can bring Paul with me.

I think that you should be ok - They may not have talked about it but they had to think about it. They should know that you will need time off....or they already have a replacement.:(

Phew, I just talked to my boss, and they had talked about it. They thought they were going to have to hire a temporary part time person to take over while I was gone, and then have me split hours with when I was ready to come back. They thought I would be gone 6weeks to 3 months. When I told her I would be willing to come back after a week or 2 she was happily shocked. I told her that I would need to bring the baby in unless we can get family members to help look after him, and she seemed ok with that, and said she would talk to the other boss(her husband) over it over the weekend. Soooo, I should know on Monday!

That's great news Cristal. In Canada, or at least Ontario, we are aloud to take a minimum of 1 year mat leave while our employers must guarantee our jobs back...it's law. If I remember correctly, we get 27 weeks unemployment insurance pay, and then no suppliment for the remainder of the time off. However, many employers, mine included, suppliment our pay to make up some of the difference. I was lucky enough to get 80% of my salary, but at that time the gov was only giving 6 months mat leave. It's a great country!!

Yeah, if my company was bigger, I would have an avenue to legally be able to take off at least 6 weeks and still have my job waiting for me, but we still financially wouldn't be able to do that. And even though this is a great company, everything leading up to the baby has made me realize that soon after, I'm going to need to find a new job. I am "full time" that works less than 40hrs a week. I get paid hourly with no raise for 2 years. No paid holidays,no sick time,no vacation time, no insurance....I'm gonna have to find something to help better take care of my kiddo when he's old enough to be in daycare I do believe.

I'm a "receptionist" who basically runs the company. I take all calls, schedule all jobs, handle customer disputes up to the point of making monetary changes, file the paperwork, take visa payments, route our technitions to jobs, handle their mistakes....and sit on my butt for a good 4 out of 6.5 hours a day doing nothing but looking online and waiting for the phone to ring cause I got everything else done lol.

Yeah, it won't be a problem I'm sure. I'm well qualified for lots of jobs out there, I just tend to be like KC and don't like going into new situations/meeting new people.
I'm thinking I'm just gonna have to get over that right quick! |

You do sound like you'd be qualified to do many jobs. However, the one you have now may be a good option when the baby comes. I don't think too many employers will let you bring your baby to work with you, and if you really need the money, the job you have is probably the best solution. I'd go ahead and try and work with the employer you have, and if it just isn't working, look elsewhere. this way it'll take a load of your mind while you wait for Paul to arrive:big_smile:

Oh yes...sorry to confuse. I was saying after Paul is old enough for daycare, then I will start looking for another job. Just that getting ready for him had made me realize the areas this job is lacking in.

Its a Fed program Fly. It's run by Employment Insurance Canada (HRDC). And even the spouse is covered for some time off also. Too bad the states don't get with it.
Any way Cristal, It will all work out for you and self instinct will guide you. Can't wait to see a photo. -------------- A little discipline at the table and at the gym might help reduce that belly! Ivan Montreal Canada (City of Festivals) |

The states are bad with giving time off for anything...in Spain the nationals got 2 months of paid leave every year...not to mention all of the holidays...for feria(essentially a fair)they got FIVE days paid time off to attend, the fifth being for a recuperation day!!!!

When my daughter was born, I worked for a bank that let me be off for as long as the doc had my wife under his care. I took 6 weeks off. For pay we could use any sick days that we had alond with any vacation. They gave us 60 sick days per year so the entire 6 weeks, I took sick time and was paid 100%. Not nearly as good at the bank Im at now

What irks me about Insurance companies is this. I am almost 100% deaf in my left ear in certain frequencies meaning I drop a lot of what tht ear can hear it is called a "profound" hearing loss. My INS will cover digital hearing aids the kind that would allow me to hear those frequencies I can not. BUT they willonly cover it if there is a Profound loss to both ears. THis year they will cover Sex Change Operations! How is that a medical need?-------------- Curl Jockeys, get outta the squat rack! 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

I like tigers idea...I could use that....bill is your invention for the hearing impaired????My husband always accused me of mumbeling...and I always had to ask if he was deaf...turned out he is in one ear...they found it during his physical when we were getting out of the Navy.. launching all those planes off of an air craft carrier has made him almost completely deaf in one ear...I felt like such a jerk saying to him "what are you deaf"???...and he was:(
