I was listening to a doctor on the radio and he was saying how he sees many patients who have suffered kidney damage due to people on high protein diets. And I was just wondering is it really that bad to have a lot of protein as long as you have carbs as well? At the moment I get around 180g of protein and 200carbs a day, is this a safe amount to be taking? What are everyone’s thoughts on taking high amounts of protein and the risks?

Some studies have shown that if you have pre-existing kidney problems, a high protein diet may cause further damage. However, to my knowledge, no study has ever linked protein to the kidney damage of a healthy person with a healthy set of kidneys.
Also, that study was done with mostly sedentary women - not physically active weight lifters.
Most people that say high protein diets adversely affect your kidneys do not have any source to back up the claim, they just repeat the same baseless claim someone else told them.
Be sure to drink plenty of water when eating high amounts of protein, though.
