I think I am pretty young to be having any pain in my knees while I'm doing exercises. But it's not only when i'm squating that I have pain in my knees. Whenever I crouch down or cross my legs for a while and then extend them, They hurt really bad and I have to keep it extended for a couple of seconds and then go on. What can I do to stop this? By the way, I'm 15 male 160 lbs. 5 8

From what I have read its not good for hips, and knees to cross your legs. And in women it can cause veircros veins.
You may have devoloped some from of tendonitis........do you run, play b ball or anything alot? and prior knees related injuries -------------- The following, has not be approved by the FDA or FT, it was not meant to diagnose, treat,or prevent any diease(s) Please consult a moderator or doctor before using any of the suggestions or comments. |

I used to run a lot when i was losing weight, which was about 4 months ago. The only pain I would get is from my shins. I think I got this because I would run in my back yard where there are hills and holes and stuff, and I didn't wear the right gear for running. I used casual shoes. K-Swiss shoes. But other then that I never had any other pain. When I was younger around 1st grade i remember me and a couple of my friends would jump down a high playground thing and I'm thinking that might have screwed up my knees. The height was about 15 ft. The only injurie I had there that I noticed was a sprained ankle. I used to be in sports also when I was younger, but I quit at middle school. That's about it.

thing is, when you run, a "shock" wave is sent.....up your feet, threw ancles, shines, knees lower back etc. Proper shoes are very important. 1, 2 insoles if you have to, and run on somthing solid if you can.
are you warming up properly, are you stretching? -------------- The following, has not be approved by the FDA or FT, it was not meant to diagnose, treat,or prevent any diease(s) Please consult a moderator or doctor before using any of the suggestions or comments. |

I don't run anymore trying to build muscle mass, but no I never used to do any type of warm up other then a 30 sec. stretch every once in a while.

If you went up pretty fast in squats, or even leg presses, it may well be connective tissue(ligaments, etc.) What happens is the muscle can keep up, but the joints, ligaments, tendons etc. cannot. Rest will do it, and then start wrapping your knees.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

I forgot the word, but it rasies stallic(sp) pressure, anyways it raises the pressure of somthing int he knees, and helps support them.
I use knee wraps, when i'm over 400 or so lbs on squats.....and on nothing else. To me they are just liek a belt, or straps......a tool if used properly can help you get stronger. How is yoru form on squats? Do you use a close stance? I have been doing a version of sumo squats for a while, and I find if I keep the weight on "outside" of my feet, the pressure is put on my hips and legs and not my knees. Only thing is you have to be fairly flexable in the hip groin area. -------------- The following, has not be approved by the FDA or FT, it was not meant to diagnose, treat,or prevent any diease(s) Please consult a moderator or doctor before using any of the suggestions or comments. |

My stance is about shoulder width. So I wouldn't say it's a close stance. What are sumo squats?

sumo squats are out side shoulder width, abotu 6in or so. Ever watch a sumo wrestler get ready to wrestle? you should be in that same low posistion. I like it once I get used to it.-------------- The following, has not be approved by the FDA or FT, it was not meant to diagnose, treat,or prevent any diease(s) Please consult a moderator or doctor before using any of the suggestions or comments. |

also because of this stance, you lean over quite far, because you push your butt further back, and you lean forward to balance, so you will ned a very strong lower back.-------------- The following, has not be approved by the FDA or FT, it was not meant to diagnose, treat,or prevent any diease(s) Please consult a moderator or doctor before using any of the suggestions or comments. |

I'll see how those workout next leg day. I have noticed though that if I don't lock out my knees at the top of the movement they don't really hurt all that bad. Is this my problem?

You may want to increase calcium intake to 2k-3k per day and magnesium to 5 mg. per lb. of bodyweight. This regimine works great for me. I have knee issues also, and I really noticed it any time I knelt down for instance. The above protocol has all but wiped out my knee issues.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

varicose veins are caused from stasis (prolonged sitting, standing, etc.) hypercoagability and vein wall damage. two of these are nutritionally based and the other is a movement factor...go figure, all totally preventable.

I know this post is old but I'm catching up in this section! And this one didn't seem to get a closing response to his last question.
For DX14AG: In a word - YES - locking your knees at the extension of you squat or leg press is not good for your knees. Excellent self observation! I've had knee troubles since I hit my teens (29 now) and that was key in every physio apointment - strengthen by doing resistance training but use proper for to ensure you don't do damage. |
