Riz, as a Mom I have to say that this sounds like a really good way to wind up with large, unattractive knuckles. I don't think any of us wants that, now do we?

Riz,
knuckle push ups are used in martial arts to toughen your knuckles for breaking boards or well breaking people. it helps to build a callas over your knuckle...and yeh not the most attractive though:)

I think I still hold the record in my old neighborhood. I did 30 knuckle push ups on the concrete. It's all in the mind dude. I dont know if they have any particular advantages over the regular ones.

Ok. From the Martial Arts perspective, there is a great advantage to knuckle pushups. You are supposed to put most of the pressure on your first two knukles. This promotes proper bone alignment for pushups, and punches.

If you put your fist on the desk/floor/leg with just the first two knuckles touching it, you can see that you Ulna and Radius are in a straight line from your knuckles.

I'm sure that I could explain this better, but it's more of a visual/physical thing. Gloves are good to wear when doing this if you are concerned about your knuckles.

hi, as jonathanweaver said these very good - if you're using them to build up your knuckles and such for martial arts or anything along those lines, for kung-fu training here's what we used to do - try it out for size if you like, I couldn’t do it these days! (On a wooden floor with no rest in between sit ups and press ups)

30 sit ups
30 regular press ups
30 sit ups
30 knuckle press ups
30 sit ups
30 press ups on the back of the wrists

30 push ups on the back of the wrists? Sounds like one of those useless exercises some kid in junior high makes up lol.

Sounds like a way to focus the pushup on the tricep more then the chest...provided the forarm doesn't snap in two.

A really good way to get good at pushups that I once used is as follows. I did as many pressups as I could one day to see what my best score was. I managed 30 before flopping onto my face. So, I knocked 5 off this total and did two sets of 25 reps each day with a rest between them. Over the course of 5 weeks, I reduced this rest period from 60 seconds to 0 seconds in 15 second increments.

Say for example, your personal best is 30 consecutive pushups like mine was. Do two sets of 25 pressups (don't be tempted to do any more) in the first week with a 60 second rest between them. In week 2, do two sets of 25 reps with 45 seconds' rest. In week 3, do two sets of 25 reps with 30 seconds rest. In week 4, do two sets of 25 reps with 15 seconds' rest. In week 5, do 50 reps. You may not manage the full 50 but you'll do far more than the 30 you could originally do. I did this when I was 16 and increased my maximum number of consecutive pushups from 30 to 64 in 5 weeks. I used to do these pressups every night just before having a shower and going to bed.

Hope this helps.

Wouldn't just increasing your muscle mass in the chest be the same as increasing the amount of pushups you can do? If that is the case, just sign up for a fitness plan here on FT and build mass. Then you'll be able to do more pushups. I think

I like to do pushups using my weight bar on the ground. That way I can grip it and get down nice and low.

Another good variation is to do them with your feet on a chair and your hands on two (dining room) chairs. Then you can really lower yourself deep.

i work early morning shifts, and I decided to toss away my energy drink for 15 minutes of exersise in the morning. I found by simply doing five sets of 10 pushups, and two sets of 50 sit ups, and a hundred jumping jacks, it gives me more engergy than drinking a can of red bull, or a large coffee. Also I managed to go below the 200lb mark. So I can finally jump on my son's trampoline.
