I have a friend whose on the L.A. Xpress diet and say it is safe and(she's only just begun) works well for her, but my concern is that she cuts back on alot of carbs and such for the 1st few days as a "cleansing" then changes as she goes along. She can have a cheese burger with or without the bun, but can't have pork cause of the salt. I thought that hamburgers where the worst for you when losing weight? As she progreses she can add more types of food to her diet and say it includes all the major foods, but my concern is is it really safe or just another word for "crash diet" and should I be concerned. Has anyone here tried it and does it really work?Or am I just being overbearing? Your thought and feedback is greatly appreicated.

By cutting carbs you are in essence cutting calories. A high protein high fat diet has been shown to work in dieting for years(see keto diets). If she is taking in enough nutrients and calories to sustain her activity level she will be fine. Glucose for the brain can easily be supplied by fats, in fact up to 80% or more. The body will also learn to use fat for fuel in these type diets.

As far as adding, this is fine as long as she remains under her maintenance levels to keep weight loss going.

Bottom line, like any diet, this is the answer. Calorie deprivation in some manner...i.e...fats, carbs, whatever, will result in weight loss.
