I only recently got into weights and I’m loving it. I am soaking up all I can find to try to learn as much as I can about doing things properly in ways I can so I am really glad to have found this site. I recent bought very affordable Marcy bench system. And scored a mish mash mess of weights of different brands and am about to get another Marcy with some lats and a vinyl system. The only trouble is there is no room in the house for this stuff so I decided in order to do this I was going to have to keep my gear out side in the back yard.
So far so good I am using everything on a near daily basis. But most of the folks that know of my storing them outside seem to feel I am abusing my gear. I figure the price I got everything at made it something I’m comfortable with doing. I painted all my iron weights with a rust resistant coating. I have also doused every thing with 3 in one oil on hopes to combat the elements. And I towel every thing down after a rain snow or frost. In fact they may be getting even more pampered for being outside that they would have from being inside. Plus I love being outdoors while I do this.
Do you as folks who use your gear feel I’m wronging my stuff? I mean my intention is to outlive it anyway.
Do you have any thoughts on caring for outdoor weights?
I even for a day wrapped them all in plastic but they looked so goofy. Somehow taking the stupid plastic back off made em look tuff and ready for work.
As a matter of fact, you're committing a cardinal sin. :) I only had a carport for years and it beat the heck out of not working out. You might want to check into some products like Top Coat and there are several others. I have a pretty large wood shop and the stuff I use to protect my cast iron tools works well on metal that's out in the elements.
Do the weights still weigh the same after it rains? Is their structural integrity compromised by grass stains?
If you want pretty weights, then lift at the local health club. But you don't need shiny plates to accomplish your fitness goals.

If you smoke or don’t wear your seatbelt, please don’t tell me the deadlift is dangerous.
Hey thanks for the replies.
I have decided my ego actually likes the beaten up weights look anyway. It makes them look user unfriendly.
I’ll look for the topcoat.
Thanks.
