Legs on the bench?

I am not a tall guy and have pretty short legs which won't sit flat on the ground on a bench press unless I arch my back, which I know is bad. So I've always just bent my knees and put my feet right up on the bench with me. That way I don't arch my back at all. Is that bad for any reason?

I hope not! I do that too sometimes when I'm getting to the end of my set and know that it'd be easy to cheat by arching my back.

Being a not tall girl, I also just put my legs out to the sides of the bench. Seems to work ok as well.

Really the only bad thing about doing this is from a saftey standpoint. With heavy weight for instance on the bench press, if a plate or something would slip off(no collars) for instance, or a bad spot, with your feet on the bench you have no balance to offset the fall. Other than that, I see no problem, and do this often myself just for a change.

One thing to try, in order to keep your feet next to the bench, is to prop them up. Ed Coan, one of the strongest men in history pound for pound, is only 5'4". When he lies flat on the bench, his feet don't lie flat on the ground (a competition no-no), so when he does bench, including in competition, he places plates on the floor next to the bench and puts his feet on them.

Hope that helps....

Yeah, I place an aerobic bench at the end of the bench for my feet - feels more stable than feet on the bench.

Sometimes they have special platforms for that purpose.
My gym has a few of them.
