I just thought I would bring this cool recreation to your attention - it has been a really fun way to get the whole family out and about, it usually involves a good amount of walking/hiking, makes you use your brain, sometimes requires use of a compass, very family oriented and it often brings you to historically significant sites - you can't help but pick up a bit of education along the way!
Do a google search for letterboxing or letterboxes in your state or city.
Letterboxing is a form of geo-caching that dates back to the 1800's, at least. You look up clues online and then follow them to find a hidden box that contains a stamp and a logbook. You bring your own stamp, an inkpad or marker and your own notebook. you stamp your notebook and record the site and leave your mark in their logbook, then re-hide the box. Your notebook becomes a sort of passport showing all of the places you have found boxes. it is also neat to see and recognize some of the same stamps in different logbooks. A lot of the sites have hand-made stamps that are very cool, and a lot of the visitors have their own hand-made stamps.
If you check out Letterboxing North America online, they have a how-to get started and how to make your own stamp.
We have really enjoyed the pirate-like treasure hunting and the exercise we get hiking around looking for different boxes.
The boxes are all over the world - so if you are going on a trip look online for letterboxes in the area!
Have fun, i hope some of you check it out!

We are considering placing some boxes ourselves, just haven't found the right spot yet.
Isn't it funny to think you may have been passing by boxes at parks everytime you are there and not even know it?
We are addicted now - anytime we are going on a trip we check to see if there are nearby boxes.
It is definitely an adventure. I hope you all have fun!

This is great Amy!! I will try this out this weekend with the girls. They love this stuff!
they have something similar to this but it is on a dinner train. It is called the mystery train and sort of like the game Clue. They love that too!
