Start with a walking program and cut out any excess junk food in your diet. Spend some time reading about healthy eating here on freetrainers - lots of good info available.

Did the doc give you any back exercises?
You could start with lying on your stomach and lifting your right arm and left leg about an inch off the floor, then switching to the left arm and right leg, alternating, don't lift too high and pause while lifted. This will strengthen the muscles all laong your spine.

Also do a search online - there are some sights with pictures of back exercises. Back extensions and bird dogs would be good.

Abdominal strength plays into back strength also, so don't neglect your crunches.

Good luck and welcome to freeetrainers!
