Hello - I just started the 8 wk muscle mass program and have a question about the calorie intake... I have about 25 to 30 pounds of fat that needs to go. Would it be okay to limit my calorie intake to 1500 - 2000 while I am "overweight"? I still make sure that my protein needs are being met, but I would prefer to lose this fat before I take on 3000+ calories a day.

Is this wise?

Welcome to ft! Yes, you can reduce your caloric intake. However, when you weight train, you may need the extra calories as your body will begin to increase your metabolism. Also, you can consume 3000+ calories, without consuming much fat. Additionally, you can burn additional calories by incorporating cardio exercises at least 3x per week. Something else for you to think about...

Keep the proteins high, moderate carb intake and some fat.
Try doing cardio on empty stomach and no carbs in the late night time.

You should be okey then.

Lower your total calorie intake for a while and see how your body reacts.

Good luck.

Try this site:
http://www.hussman.org/fitness

You'll have to scroll a LONG ways, but eventually you'll come to a link that says "determine your BMR" or some such thing. You'll have to put in your sex, age, weight, and BF%, and it will pop up with your BMR (basal metabolic rate or something like that). That is the smallest caloric amount you can have without our body going into starvation mode. It will also give you 2 groups of numbers. The first is the caloric intake you should get if you want to lose weight, the second is what you need if you want to gain muscle. Hope that helps!
