Hi every one.
I posted this somewhere else and haven't received any replies, but I really do need help. I have a REALLY big behind and when I lie down to do some exercises I feel like Im straining my lower back since my spine curves. I am scared I may be doing myself more harm than good. Anybody out there wuth the same problem - or, even better, with an answer

I'm sorry, gracelet, but I can't help you here, but wanted to post as I don't want you to think no one is reading your question....I think what is important is keeping your back from arching during exercise, what I mean is, for instance, when I lie on my back and lift weights for my hamstrings, I keep my pelvis flat on the bench, but when my husband has tried he raises his, creating undo pressure on his lower spine. You may want to try other exercises for awhile that will have much the same effect as the ones you are attempting, most have alternatives.
I hope you get a better answer, I'm not an expert, but wanted to let you know that you can look into alternative exercises.

Hi Gracelet! I kinda have the same problem. What I do when I do exercises on the floor is place a pretty thick pillow on the floor to lay on so that there isn't so much strain on your lower back. Works great for me; I hope that is works for you.

I have the same problem. It makes buying jeans a terrible experience and pilates damn near impossible. Everytime I hear Mari Windsor say to flatten your back against the floor I can't help but yell "Speak for yourself!" at the tv screen. I think I will try the pillow idea.

Thanks for the posts and advice. I will try the pillow next time I exercise, thanks olive.Veda, what I normally do is refuse to do any exercise where I don't feel comfortable, but beleive me, thats really limiting!! And I know what you mean about the jeans tiff!!
Thanks again,
Gracelet

When I was took pilates the instructor recommended rolling towels to the appropriate thickness and placing under the small of your back.

I'm a tall girl and I got some annoying lower back problems :( I've learnt to work with it and I know that some exercises I just cannot do (like rowing, sit ups, heavy squat or even heavy bench press!).
You can always find a solution to work the muscles without hurting yourself.
For your legs and glutes do tons of lunges.
