A snail is climbing straight up a brick wall at a constant rate. It takes the snail 8 hours to climb up 6ft. After climbing for 8 hours, the snail rests for 4 hours (zzzzz), during which time it slides 2 ft down the wall. The snail starts at the bottom of the wall and repeats this climbing up/sliding down process continually.

Write a sequence of numbers that gives the snail's height above the ground every 4 hours, starting when the snail is at the bottom of the wall and ending 36 hours later.

Note: No, I don't know why the snail is doing this, I just wish he would stop.

Why do I get a feeling this is a trick question designed to make those who answer look foolish. lol. Are you sure it starts again at the bottom or does it continue where it left off when it wakes up?

If it continues where it left when it wakes up:

3,6,4,7,10,8,11,14,12

Otherwise:

3,6,4,3,6,4,3,6,4

No it not a trick. You must be helping one of your kids.
Here is a .pdf file. Do a search for "snail". Its the same problem for 4 hours instead of 8 hours to climb the 6ft.

lol No trick BG. This is a problem from my algebra homework. I am a brain injury survivor and am in intermediate algebra because the part of my brain that does numbers is partially fried. This is just another attempt to relearn, here's hoping it works.

The problem is from the section on number patterns so if we use the pattern +3,+3,-2, the snail is at 3,6,4,7,10,8,12,15,13. I have no idea whether or not it is correct.

I'm a psych major so my first concern is "Why" the snail is climbing the wall in the first place. lol Thanks for your help!

Now I know how the snail feels.

It should be 3,6,4,7,10,8,11,14,12 sigh....

Oops, my comment about helping your kids must have sounded a little condescending. Sorry.

You are correct except for the last three numbers which is +4,+3,-2 ( 8 + 4 = 12, should be 8 + 3 = 11 ) rather than +3,+3,-2. As for why he's climbing, you're more qualified to answer that question. lol

Good luck with the relearning.

I agree with the why part totally Anni. WHY IS the snail crawling up a wall in the first place?

I mean, shouldn't the little creature be nestled safely in a tuft of grass somewhere?

Yes Dfly, he should be nestled in the grass, or in some melted butter. He should certainly not be in my math book.

As a phych major you should be worried about why you are so concerned about the snail when so many people out there need you to help them. For $150 an hour

Anni has given me thousands of $$ worth of wonderful shrink advice. She is a great counselor but probably needs to hire a good accountant.

Thanks Charlie!

Michael says that we should kill the snail and move forward, but that seems aggressive.
