I started with those tiny....barbells doing 20lb total...lol....back at 14...i was afraid to go higher....then by the end of 1st semester of HS, this coach kept encouraging me...so i went up to 130....couldn't crack those 45s for the life of me...lol

As a freshman, my max was around 90 pounds. As a sophmore, it was around 130, and it is the end of my junior year and I'm doin around 170. I'm goin for at least 200 at the beginning of my senior year. Bench is definitely one of my weak areas. HAHA it sucks being white Andrew. My vert's gettin close to 30 now and I'm dunking pretty good, but man it's taken a lot of work and learning.-------------- I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious. --Vince Lombardi "Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. I dread reading you guys stats for the bench press. I'm 16 years old and can barely get 145 up! I see bigandrew jumped a whole 30 lbs. and just six weeks! Man I wish I could do that. I probably could if I could just get serious about the eating part of this. Man I really have to get that down.

well I was still over 200lbs when that happened.....so I wasn't even doing by body weight just yet. bench is still my weakest lift ============ Quoting from DX14AG: I dread reading you guys stats for the bench press. i would preferably use the nautilus machines at my school when we would go to work out during phys ed. not a big fan of benching, squats, deadlifts, freeweights etc.etc.-------------- ~If A equals success, then the formula is: A = X + Y + Z, X is work. Y is play. Z is keep your mouth shut. |

that's too bad....because if you're aiming to build stronger muscles, build new muscle, improve flexibility, balance, coordination....then free weights are just about the best way to do it....especially with compound exercises like deadlifts, squats, and bench....machines are alright to supplement your workouts or work around an injury but for a healthy person getting into weight lifting ...it's a waist of time(I know some will disagree and will say that machines are a good transition to free weights, but I disagree with that assumption....by doing the free weights all along you'll be building all the auxillary muscles along the way which will not be the case with machines as well as working on your balance and coordination both which are not stressed by machines)
however to each his own...just my usual 2 cents...maybe even 3...lol

thanks for ur input... when i move this summer im gonna join a gym and i was also wondering if i should use freeweights or machines... do you use freeweights all the time or do u use SOME machines?-------------- ~If A equals success, then the formula is: A = X + Y + Z, X is work. Y is play. Z is keep your mouth shut. |

I use machines to supplement my workouts or if I am short on time....so I at times use leg curl machine..for example because I am short on time to load freeweight bar to do stiff legged deadlifts.....however freeweights make up 95% of my exercises...
Do freeweights....forget about machines for now...also focus on compound exercises....you may even think about skipping isolation lifts for a while...

i started lifting my first weights ever at the end of 9th grade football season...i maxed about 145lbs weighing 180 lbs 5'8..at the end of the 5 month training period i maxed 190lbs...end of 10th grade football season i maxed 210lbs weighing 205 and standing 5'9...and in only 3 months i then maxed again getting 255lbs weighing 210 5'9...everyone in the skool swore i was on steroids but i wasnt...i wasnt even taking any kind of suppliments..i have no idea how i get so strong so fast only working out 3 days a week for about 45 mins...my muscles got so big on my arms and chest, it started to leave stretch marks around my armpit areas..if anyone can explain this please do cuz i have no idea how i got that strong without cheating..-------------- b r a n d e n |

ummm, thats not that abnormal. Not for someone that weight lifts. You may have good genetics. A lot of people that don't weight train will accuse you of using steriods. I get that all the time, and im not that big. I'm just stronger than everyone else because I lift heavy and train smart. A lot of our football team in high school didn't like me because I could lift with the "larger" members of our football team and do the same weight they could at 135lbs. -------------- The best feeling in the world is the feeling you get after a tough set of squats after you step back from the power rack and throw up all over the floor. |

well you had a different approach.....you worked out less, and rested more. Most when they start working out.....do chest 2x a week same with shoulders......a day of back and arms, but arms are done 3x a week.....with legs maybe once a month......and rest none.....
diet, genetics,build....yoru rather short( no offense) shorter arms.....shorter range of motion. ** At my high school there was a wrestler that was 5'4" 140lbs...and benched 275.....short arms....wide grip...like 4 in of movement lol.... -------------- Friends don't let friends squat high... |

I'm 14 my max is 165. And to stop all the stupid questions: For a 14 year old benching anything above 145 is pretty good, and squating anything above 300 is not bad either.

Don't worry about how much you lift, just concentrate on improving your lifts!!!
I was a 105 senior in HS and benched 205lbs. Now I am 35 weigh 172 lbs and haven't gotten back to that point yet!! I just try to improve the weight every week or so. |

Man all of you guys are young. I never even thought about lifting weights until I got into college. Although the first time I ever lifted I was almost 19, 155 lbs and could easily bench 150. I could say it was genetics but that would be a blatant lie. Guess all those push ups I did in high school paid off. :)

who cares how much you can lift...i dont get why guys make such a big deal about how much they can lift and if its "good or bad." Dont be so competitive. As long as you notice results thats all that should matter!
P.S. nothing is funnier than watching guys at the gym lift weights that are obviously way to heavy for them that they cant even use proper form on the first set! :dumbbell: |

Dude, at 175 lbs and benchpressing 155 is pretty impressive. I dont know whether you bench that in sets or just as a max, but benching anything close to your weight is good. I'm 16 and at 225 lbs. I bench 180 in three sets. As a max i bench my weight

I couldnt agree more. When I was in high school I was constantly worrying about if I was getting the attention of the girls. Now I am more worried about getting negative attention from my Commander for not passing my PT tests. Remember it is not about WHAT you lift but about HOW you lift.

everything is subjective. if you can do more now than when you started then that's progress and that's all you can hope for. The rest is just ego stroking and is pointless.
