I began to change my lifestyle and start exercising on November 01, 2004. I should have started my period on November 17 or 18 and I still havent gotten one. Could it be due to the fact that I started to exercise and I stressed my body out? What else besides preganancy would cause me to skip a period? TIA Shelly

Being underweight would make you miss periods. Or maybe you’re just late, you could still come on but it will be really heavy. I doubt exercise could make your periods stop not unless you are underweight. Don't stress too much about it.

Just looked it up and exercise can make you miss a period but it’s extremely unlikely, you would have to have been exercising excessively. Stress is a common cause and rapid weight loss or gain can make you skip periods, but like I say you could just be late.

Thank you Harvest-moon
I am not by any means underweight actually I am overweight. Since the beginning of the month I have been drinking about 80 oz of water each day, along with 30-60 minutes of cardio (stationary bike or walking videos) 3-5 days a week and working out with the FT program, and eating healthier. I have noticed that I have lost about 2 inches in my thighs and about an inch from my arms. I have also lost about 7 lbs. I dont have any stress in my life. I make my own work schedule and I have a grat marriage-no struggles right now. I guess I will take a pregnancy test tomorrow morning and if its NEG than I am thinking its due to all the new exercise. thanks for your help :) Shelly |

Well, even though I am not a woman, and never experienced what you go through, I can tell you exercize can change your cycles. When you change your diet and start exercising, you are making a change to your metabolism, which controls alot of processes in your body. So, you are making a change and your periods may change also.Keep up the good work and way to go on the changes.
Hope this helps. -------------- "A will finds a way, failure is not an option" Ivan carivan@freetrainers.com Montreal Canada |

shelly i'm frequently a 7-14 days late, sometimes skipping entirely. i typically have 4-5 1hr intense, heavy lifting sessions per week, which i have always assumed was the reason why this happens. in your case, if you change your regular routine at all, it can throw off your cycle. once you adapt, it should return to normal.
if the intensity of your program causes you to continue to be irregular and it bothers you, the only way to regulate it is to get on the pill, which in my opinion, is not worth it. -------------- i wish you ill, ice-t. margarine is a liar who announces, "i am butter!" |

How much are you eating Shelly?
As the others have said, it may just be due to increased exercise, but even if your weight is normal or above, restricting your intake too much (especially if you have just increased your activity level), can affect your cycle. I agree that checking a pregnancy test should be the first thing to do. Let us know how you get on. |

around 6 years ago this happened to me and it was due to excessive exercise....but would be wise to check for pregs just in case:)

Being too overweight can make your period go away just as being underweight can. I noticed that you said you were over weight, but did not specify by how much. If you are usually very regular you need to go see someone about it.
