I know that many recommend having a protein shake in the middle of the night to keep your body fueled with protein, but do you think this is a good idea when cutting?

Whether or not you're cutting, you need to maintain your overall protein intake.

well if you re trying to get cut, then that means that you prolly want to have a neg cal expenditure at the end of the day. so if you eat protein at night, then most likely it is going to turn into fat.

Jsambu, don't know where you get your facts from, but protein does not turn into fat! Carbohydrates can turn into fat if consumed in larger quantities than the body can burn as fuel.

Now thats a scary thought, imagine if that was true about protein turning to fat Steriods (helps with protein synthesis) would have made Levrone, Wheeler, Yates, big balls of fat! Protein is what builds muscle.

Just one thing about a midnight protein shake you should all know....... No, it'll not make you fat IF you are considering the calories of your shake into your daily total calorie intake.

Don't forget that loosing/gaining weight is all about calories. If I ate 4000 cal of proteins daily (and nothing else!!) and I only need 2000 then oh yes, the proteins will still be able to make me gain fat (part of the gluconeogenisis).
BUT it's true that the body prefers to take carbs (glycogenolysis) as source and hide those small buggers into our fat cells.

A protein intake during the night should be okey. Why not just try it and see how your body responds.

hey rpacheco i thought you said that protein doesnt turn into fat. i think philia2 just clarified that situation. it all has to do with your total cal intake.

Man, i can't beleive all of the misinformation that gets thrown around here. I intake twice my weight in protein and no, it sure as hell isn't turned into fat. Some of you guys need to research topics before you go and dispense advice. I know i have. I am going to school for this stuff.

HUH?

Wait a second here... A gram of protein has an average of 4 calories.

So is someone saying that if you eat nothing but protein and exceed your body's caloric needs that none of that will be stored as fat?

Excess calories are (for the most part) stored as fat. I am pretty sure that's more of less a fact of nature.

That protein can't turn into fat goes against common sense...

dahayz, were you saying you did or didn't agree that proteins can be stored as fat??

Opinions are like (deleted explitive) because everyone has one... I don't see Doctor ahead of anyones name. That's one of the most annoying things about sports medicine is everyone has an opinion that they argue against all the others. Here's a better question.. why on Earth would anyone comsume only protein?? The day that happens you should worry about whether or not it will result in fat gains.

Jsambu, if you read what Nina actually wrote, it's the calories that will turn into fat...not the protein itself. All protein shakes have a fair amount of calories to consider in your daily diet.

Anyway, where's Michael the chemist? He should have his 2 cents on this one...

What I was trying to say was that if all your calories came from protein (which no one would do but for the sake of the example) it wouldn't matter where the calories came from.
Calories are calories and too many of them equal storage.

sorry that example didn't make more sense.

This topic is really turing into a heated discussion. What If I only ate fat, like krispy kreme dounuts? Meanig all I consumed was krispy kreme donuts. Would my body have to change and resort to using ths fat from the donuts to build muscle ect......LOL I am so sure that protein will not turn to fat, I will take this belief to my grave......LOL
I am gonna try the donut thing for awhile, wish me luck!

In the end, it's all about preference. If u can consume nothing but protein and not gain fat, excellent. People can do that. If you are afraid of gaining fat from eating lots of protein, then DON'T DO IT. It's all about preference.

Proteins will NOT turn into fat if YOU HAVE A NEED FOR IT!!!!!

Geez.... Okey, forgot the calories but still...... guys, it's so simple. Imagine a big weight lifter and then a nice little lady who never moves more than a few meters daily. Well if those two completely different people eat 600gr of proteins daily, now what will happen?!!!!!
The weight lifter will use the proteins to repair and build up his muscles but our small little lady will turn fat as the potato she's imiting on the couch.

Now, you nice people in here DID YOU GET IT NOW?!!!!!!

You cannot say stupid things as "oh, I'm suuuuure that proteins will NEVER turn into fat and that's a fact" etc 'cause the human body is able to do a lot more than you ever can imagine AND every darn people is different!!!!!

Come on, open up your eyes and dahayz from reading your first not-very-nice-letter I'll just say one thing: you go back to school.

Now, let's move on!

Cain is no longer available for comment. Some two days ago he turned into a fish and was sold at the third street pet store to a chinese food store owner...

well... I just killed some time reading this thread. Why would someone think that protein turns into fat? the facts are... If one were to eat too much protein it would not matter because any protein consumed other then what your body needs will end up in the toilet and not into fat cells. And if your not using it to repair muscles then it will be a source of fuel. I felt I needed to contribute something. -my .02
