It might not be much, but i deadlifted over 200lbs for the first time today. Yeah, i'm a small 19 yr old Kid, but i am happy. This is about the only good thing thats happened to me in the past 4 days so i'm happy. *Sits in contentment*:)

Yeah Tex,
Over 200 lbs is a great accomplishment, gotta reward yourself man for goals you set, gets you more motivated and excited about the next time you deadlift. Congrats man, keep it up, now shoot for 225-250. You'll do it, keep your focus and disclipine and every goal you set you WILL reach! Mind over matter baby. Take care Tex! Peace.

Last bit of gloating: i looked back at my very first figures on the deadlift when i first tried them about one month ago. i only did 115 lbs, and i thought i was gonna die. One month later i did 205lbs for 4 reps at the end of my sets. :) Wow, looking at that jump, im damned happy.

I think i have come up with a good goal, now question is can i reach it in the amount of time i want? I currently weigh 165. In september i want to weigh over 200lbs and it not be all fat. Can this be achieved, and if so, just by keeping up what im doing...or?

Good job goodoldtex!! I am a very large 28 year old and I maxed out at 225 for the dead lift a month ago. So dont be a gloater! your going to be stronger than me. Now get back in the gym and train hard!! - Mike

"for well-trained male athletes, the maximum amount of muscle you can gain in a month is approximately 1.5 pounds per month, or 18 pounds a year. (For untrained men, muscle gains in the first year can be as much as 25 pounds).Female athletes can expect to gain 8-12 pounds of muscle per year."

Some other interesting tidbits so far - in the off-season, you really only need about the equivalent of an extra chicken breast a day for calories, hence why so many bodybuilders get so big in the off-season because they think they should eat as much as possible and 'bulk' up.

A pound of muscle burns an additional 50 calories a day (hey ladies!!!get it? You want muscles!!!)

The book I am reading is called Mind & Muscle., Blair Whitmarsh, PhD Human Kinetics Press.

So an untrained athelete can gain a little over two pounds a month. I'm sure this varies wildly due to your body type, though, and is just an average, right? A recent Men's Health article promised 20 pounds of muscle in a matter of 12 weeks. I guess the book you are reading would say that's impossible and that the most you could gain in that period would be roughly 6 pounds. Big discrepency. Who's right?

david, welcome to the world of misinformation, who's right, who' wrong. The unfortunate thing about the health and fitness industry is the lack of many set standards. Since everyone is different, results will usually never be the same. A good example is what has just been posted. In my own personal experience, my results were far greater than only 1.5 lbs of muscle gain in a month. So, as you stated, everyone is different. You need to educate yourself to the best of your ability. There really is no right or wrong, just a difference in opinion.

Good point dahayz, but one thing is true for all...protein, good clean diet and exercise will yeild results beyond expectation. Oh and TEX, GOOD JOB BUDDY! Personal bests are always a motivation. F the norm!
