Hi all. I read an interesting article the other day in a magazine on a "Milk Conspiracy". It said various negative things about milk and those that sell/market it because it doesn't actually have all the positive effects that are advertised and it actually has a lot of negative effects. They also mentioned an interesting point that milk is meant for cows only and not humans. Why are we the only animals drinking anothers milk? Any thoughts on this topic? Don't reply if you work for a milk company ;). |

I have had cow's milk, goat's milk, etc., etc., and no negative side effects yet (except for these little 6 inch high green men that run around my office, but that's for another conspiracy theory...). In fact, the few times that I have gone without milk for a day or two, I end up feeling like crap. It has been shown in many studies that one type of mammal can survive on another mammal's milk, such as a dog nursing a kitten. I'm gonna go ahead and take a stab at why humans drink another animals' milk regularly (besides because we can): it is the same motive of why humans can do many things other animals can't - reason/logic. This condition not only puts us at the top of the food chain, but allows us to realize the benefits of consuming milk on a regular basis. My 2 cents, and a tall ice cold glass milk... I guess it's quite personal. One year ago I cut out all dairy products due to a comp prep and ever since I haven't been able to eat any diary products because of severe tummy aches. I love milk myself, don't do it much pre contest due to the fact that some dairy has a tendency to hang around the waist, so why take chances. But, unless you have this reason, or you are lactose intolerant, I think milk is great. A good tall glass of ice cold skim milk is hard to beat..throw in a couple double stuff oreos(just kidding there), and what more could you ask for???-------------- The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary! |

That's a discussion I've had on another board with several people. I've heard that angle coming from vegans and and some nutritionists. I can see arguements on both sides (though the "Why do we drink another animal's milk?" doesn't fly with me - why do we eat or drink anything that we do or don't?). First off, though the lactose in dairy products is low on the glycemic index, it does ellicit a higher insulin response than you'd expect - which of course in not entirely desirable. Obviously the fact that the majority of humans are lactose intolerant throws another wrench in the gears (however, this is not a problem for me). However, the benefits of calcium and vitamin D are not myths nor a part of a conspiracy. I've been drinking milk all my life, usually in large quantities and despite my reckless nature, have never broken a bone (this is from a guy that used to jump off 20 foot bridges into rivers because it was fun). And you can't ignore the almost ideal mix of high quality protein in dairy (20% whey, 80% casein). The arguement really goes both ways. Personally, I do drink milk and it would take more than a little insulin spike to make me stop.-------------- "Don't follow leaders and watch your parking meters!" -- Bob Dylan |

I drink 3-4 gallons of milk every week. Skim, of course. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with milk unless you are lactose intolerant. I use milk in my oatmeal, protein shakes, and just to drink plain. I love it. The bioavailability of the protein is amazing; your body utilizes well over 90% of it. With the amount of milk I drink, I may be getting an extremely high amount of calcium that could turn to kidney stones, but I drink enough water to drown a fish, so I'm hoping that will counteract it to a degree. Milk is also a great source of potassium, which is perfect for post-workout shakes. I am obviously very pro-milk.-------------- --JBennett "I've up-ed my intensity.... now up yours!" Cool, thanks guys. I've always really loved milk but I am the type that reads an article and gets worried automatically. I'm back into the Milk full force. Thanks again. |

Does drinking too much milk often cause calcium build-ups? Is there some kind of limit to avoid this? One day everyone on earth should group together all of our nutrition knowledge and write a book that tells us all what we need to eat. That's what I think. |
