Just one period or many? I have heard (I am no expert here) that sometimes women who are very physically fit tend to loose their periods, but I would suggest you talk to your doctor about it - for piece of mind and to ensure your exercise routine is right for you. :)

Hi, I'm not physically fit and I haven't had my period in over a year! 100% sure not pregnant! Since I started doing the Firm tapes everyday I stoped having it! The Firm is (aerobics & weight lifting combined). I am a vegetarian though, I hear that adds to it!
I'm 5'5 and weight around 130lbs and I'm sure inleast some of it is fat, not muscle! I wear betten a size 7-9.
Well I just wanted to add that I'm in that position too!

I've gotten pretty serious with my workouts in the last four months or so. I haven't missed any periods though. In fact, it seems to be the opposite. Sometimes I have more than one within a cycle or other times it will last for two weeks rather than its normal duration. It could be that exercise is what's causing all of the wierdness..... I think though, that if you're skipping periods and it seems out of whack for you then maybe you should see your doctor?

I am glad to hear i am not the only one. I have gotten a little serious with my workouts and i actually went to the doc today and he confirmed that my missed cycle was that of overtraining. He said once my body ajusts i should be ok.He said my system has gone into a shock mode due to change in eating habits and exercise . I just have to tone down a little bit to break the cycle. I appreciate all your feedback and help.

You might miss some and you might have real light ones. It's very strenuous on your body. I went to the doctor a few years ago 'cause of this same thing. I wasn't getting any exercise at all and was regular as can be. I started playing on 3 volley ball leagues and was playing volley ball every night. I was only sleeping like 2 hours a night and was very well rested. Missed a couple of periods and the doc said it's fine it's just my body adjusting. I need to get back into playing volley ball every night that did great for me. hehe

Must be nice Philia2! heheh

I went a year without having one once on depo provera ... It was VERY nice 'cept for the odd side effects!

Boy that stuff screwed my system up. Every time I would get a shot in my left hip it'd make my right ankle swell up as big as my thigh. It was huge. I couldn't even go into work those days. I had to get it after work and stay home for the night. And if I got it done in my right hip my left ankle would swell up that big. And it made me SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hungry. The nurse asked me to keep taking it so they could see if it'd do that to me every time and it did. That's pretty much how I gained my weight. I would go to subway and get 2 footlong subs packed with all the fruits and veggies and eat every bite and still be just starving. Or to Whataburger and get 2 full double burger value type meals and be starving. Or Papa Johns and eat an entire large pizza with a 2 liter of coke and still be starving. I was like an endless tummy or something. I gained 13-18 pounds a year on that stuff. I'm SO surprised not more 'cause I felt like I was pigging out ALL the time. And of course I didn't eat at home 'cause I was single and it was easier to just go out and eat than stay home and cook. Won't ever take that again! Thank goodness I'm not taking that anymore!

Then my best friend started realizing that I was gaining weight like her 'cause she was real big. She started inviting me over for dinner all the time and got real kept screwing up the times we planned to go work out and got mad at me when I would go workout without her. I think she just wanted me to be big like her so she would feel better or something. Not sure. But she got REAL mad at me when I started working out. It ended our friendship.

I did have one of my doctors tell me one time that if you didn't have at least 2 a year you were at a very high risk of different kinds of cancer. I doubt you are with all your healthiness and stuff hehe but I thought I'd tell you that in case you wanted to ask your doc about it sometime.

Good Gravy I like to babble don't I? hehe ;)

I haven't had a period for over 3 years, and like laneylou it's because I am on the depo shot. I have had the average weight gain of about 4 lbs a year with it, and so on top of working to lose the weight I gained from eating poorly, I also have to lose my birth control weight. Ugh! Laneylou: ever try getting the shot in your arm?? It doesn't hurt as much as in the hip, and worse case scenario, if your wrist got swollen at least you would be able to walk. LOL : )

I have heard of this and I think they call it Athletic Amenorrhea?

Intense exercise and extreme thinness may reduce the levels of hormones that regulate a woman's periods.
Athletic amenorrhea is often seen in sports that stress thinness, such as gymnastics, figure skating, and long-distance running.

Extracts from an article on amenorrhea:

"Athletic amenorrhea, or the cessation of menstruation for six or more months, may seem like a blessing in disguise, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The lack of circulating estrogens in the body pose serious health risks for women: premature osteoporosis, impaired performance, infertility, increased risk of injury and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and endometrial cancer.

Although this information may seem alarming, you should note that amenorrhea is reversible, and you do not have to give up your sport to reverse it. Talk to your doctor about treatment, which typically includes a prescription for estrogen replacement in the form of an oral contraceptive. You may also need to increase your overall caloric intake, gain 2-3 percent of your body weight, add resistance training to your workout routine, and supplement with 1500 milligrams per day of calcium. Thanks for bringing this up. I was just getting ready to post the exact question. I just started training hard for boot camp. Have never been irregular, can put it on the calender months in advance. But it seems that every other month for the past four has been light spotting for one day and thats it. Scared the bejejus out of me. No more kids needed here. A friend said it might be because I am working out now. I suppose i'll accept it as the reason. I am just terrified of getting pregnant again(he's getting snipped soon). Thnks for bringing up the topic ladies.

my period has always been irregular, especially when i frist start running again...i either don't get it for a couple months or have it bi-weekly.
i always thought it was just from my body adjusting to my workouts...but yes thanks to julisa and nadia for mentioning amenorrhea.

I have always had a problem with my periods. I will have one about every two- three months. I have amenorrhea, but it gets worse when I workout. It runs in my family, as well as multiple births.

I just read an article recently on infertility that said you can stop having periods when your body fat % gets too low. Fertility clinics want a woman's BF% to be a minimum of 17% and a max of 27%. Ideally one doc said he likes his patients to be between 19% and 29%. He thought 25 was perfect. It seems when you are too thin (according to your internal judge) your body doesnt want to risk an undernourished pregnancy. Im sure someone has a more scientific explanation, but that one made the most sense to me.

On my way home after writing that I realized I meant BMI not BF. I have heard that it will happen with a low bodyfat also, but my percentages were referring to Body Mass Index. Sorry if I just added to the confusion.
