Ok, I have been working out for prob. 7-8 weeks. I have been taking usually a 2 day rest b/t the same muscle groups, I took a 3 day rest and was working out today, I usually start with forearms, chest then shoulders. But today I started with shoulders, chest then forearms, so what I am getting at is my reg. bench pressing went down 5LB'S! (everything else stayed the same including decline db bench) Do you think I got to much rest or b/c I changed my routine alittle? Thanks

If you hit a muscle group hard, two or three days rest may not be enough. Are you using an FT workout? Most of the workouts here call for a 4 to 7 day rest befor hitting it again. Muscles don't grow in size or strength while you are lifting. They grow during rest. The results you describe sound like not enough rest rather than too much.

No im not using a FT Program, but I have been seeing great results with what I have been doing only taking 2 days rest thats why I dont understand why all of sudden things are changing. I took 3 days off because everyone way saying your prob. not getting enough rest but now I got more rest and decreased in strength?

Has this only happened once? Sometimes you just have bad workout days. Could be not enough sleep the night before. Could be something you ate. Your mind might not have been totally with it. Lots of reasons to have a bad workout. Keep with it a couple of times and see what happens. Also could be that you did shoulders first and wore them out a bit for when you did flat bench.

You'll always get good results the first month or 2 of ANY program. Training a muscle group every 2 days is wrong if you are trying to lift heavy. Changing your rest to 3 days one time aint much of an experiment. Your body needs recovery and rest time in order to grow. Training more often won't make it happen. The fact that you are feeling weaker and your results are decreasing bears this out.

Charlie are you sure I should take 3 days rest? B/c I really want to get results, I know it takes time and its gonna take months and months to get the results I am looking for, but do you think taking 3 days rest will get me there faster? Thanks

David, like I said, most heavy lifting routines allow for 5 to 7 days between body parts. Even if you don't use an FT routine you can look at them for ideas. Plug in the FT special mass plan and take a look . Its worth a little research. Less is more in this case. If you hit your tris abd bis hard they need the recovery time to grow. You can work out 4 or 5 times a week , you just need to work out your splits to give yourself the recovery time you need.

At 17 with proper diet and rest you should be able to gain like crazy.

Just for some insight, I use to work out 6 days a week with a 2 day split. Doing this burnt me out after a while. My theory (unresearched) is that the muscle recovers based on size. By hitting the muscles again only 3 days later in the beginning you grow. After a while when you reach a certain point, your muscles begin to take longer to recover due to the heavier weights being used. You probably have reached this point. By changing your routine now to have more rest days, you will see a big difference in how you go up in weight. Since changing my own workout in accordance with the research I've done (5-7 days rest), the weight/reps have increased consistently since. Hope this helps! :)

i do pushups everyday, and have excellent results. doing good ol fashion pushups is just as good, maybe even better then benching. it avoids the risk of injury, and it works all your muscles.
