Hi all.

I've just re-started exercising after two years of laziness *embarassed* ;)

I have a terrible shcedule, I never know how much time I'm going to spend at work, and I can't seem to stick to any fixed workout program.

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to work out early in the morning, before work. That would keep me from skipping a day.

Will I be too tired at work?

Thanks guys. Am new around here and I need your support. :)

Yo Perfect_Elise!

For me, working out first thing in the morning gives me a boost for the whole day--makes me feel like I can take on the whole world - or anything that the crazies at work can dish out. Besides, by the time I get home, I've got too many other things to do. I'd never be motivated enough to workout in the PM. Why not give it a try for a couple weeks and seehow you feel?...

Thanx TenorSaxManDave :)

I've actually taken your advice and have started working out in the morning! I'm pretty pleased now, I've only missed one day since.

I do 45 minutes of cardio every morning, and work out 3 times a week, when I get home, no matter how late it is.

I think I should start taking some vitamins, though. I've tried to eat more meat and yogurt, to keep my protein and calcium levels up, but there must be something I'm not doing right...I feel weak and dizzy at times.

BTW, cool nickname - :)

Great job on the committment, P_E! But you should not be feeling dizzy. Did you get a physical exam from a Dr. before you started working out? How about your eating patterns? You should eat some of your protein and maybe some slow digesting carbs prior to your AM workout-especially if you're feeling weak. Also, are you getting enough water? You need to make sure your nutrition is in order. Taking a multi-vitamin is a great idea. Be careful, keep your nutrition in check, and see a doctor about the dizziness.

Hi Elise,
45 mins of cardio every morning is a lot for somebody who's not use to exercise. Maybe you are driving yourself a little bit too hard? Give your body time to addapt and make sure of getting your needed vitamines (the only way that you'll need for sure what you are missing is after having done a blood test). Good luck!!

Thanx you guys!

I have tried to watch my diet. I eat a fat-free yoghurt and rye in the morning, then mashed potatoes and white cabbage at lunch, with either eggs or chicken spikes and a steak and cabbage in the evening. I eat about 2 apples a day and have a glass of milk in the morning. And I drink A LOT of tea, about 2 litres a day. Do you think I'm getting enough protein?

I have been quite busy these days, thieves broke into my apartment and I spent a lot of time replacing locks and buying a doggie, and I did skip some of my morning cardio, but I hung on to my workouts. I don't feel tired any more.

I noticed that if I get enough sleep (which rarely happens, unfortunately) I get a lot of energy out of these workouts and actually feel *less* tired than before.

Philia2, how long did it take you to get that body?! You look amazing! 8-) How did you do it? You've just become my new role model lol ;)

I do cardio in the morning and weights in the evening. I heard that doing cardio revs up the metabolism for the rest of the day. Lifting would probably do the same thing though. Nevertheless, I have a hard time eating when I first wake up so after cardio I eat breakfast. It has worked so far and after about 3 months I noticed I wake up easier. It's as if my body knows what's up and is getting ready. Weird Huh. Gives me a whole new perspective on the day and seems to improve my energy. We can't buy time we can only manage it. Just my thoughts

Yeah, you are right about the "new perspective on the day" thing. When I work out in the morning I feel as if that hour I spend exercising is entirely my own. :)

It takes my mind off everything else.

I didn't know that either. I'm changing my workouts to in the morning. I'll start doing my cardio part of my workout in the mornings and the other stuff in the evenings. Thank you for putting that on there mengsk.

How long does it take before you start actually losing weight on these diets? It seems like I'm eating every day all day and when I stop eating I'm doing a work out. LOL I went through everything I ate yesterday and goodness I ate a lot and almost got to the totals on calories, proteins and carbos and I did get to the total on fats.

Takes a lot of work ... no wonder America has gained so much weight, everyone's so busy with everything now days! Who has time to work out! hehe ;)

perfect_elise I'm here with ya. ;) I've been trying to lose weight for a while and have lost like 17 pounds. Just started this, I'm on my second week!

laneylou, one thing to be careful of. If you do cardio first thing in the morning, do not do it on an empty stomach. Sure, you will burn alot of calories, but half or more will be muscle, which you want to keep to burn fat. This is the whole idea. Improving your muscle to fat ratio. It will not benefit you to burn too much muscle, your metabolism will slow in response, and then also you just become a smaller version of what you are rather than "shaping" your body, and soft. On top of that, when you start eating again, your body will store more as fat due to not much muscle to rev the metabolism. Have a protein shake at least before morning cardio.

If you do eat before cardio in the morning, how much do you eat and how long do you wait before starting the exercise. I've heard anywhere from a half hour to an hour... but, I've also heard exercise right after eating won't make a difference in regards to cramps. What is the correct or accepted way?

If you choose to do just a protein shake, we are talking before cardio here, a half hour is all that is needed. If you are going to do weights, and really push things, then I would suggest a serving of oats and some type of lean protein. Give yourself in this case an hour to hour and a half before resistance training. But regardless, you never ever want to work out on an empty stomach. Much muscle will be sacrificed, and this is your best freind in the fight against fat.

bb1 ... thanks for the 411. ;) I did better yesterday than today. Yesterday had 4 egg whites, 2 pieces of toast with promise fat free butter and jelly, coffee and some fruit. Today just had some honeydew and yogurt. hehe Gotta get into that routine of getting up and making myself breakfast.

I thought it didn't matter if you ate or not before exercising?? That sucks because I have JUST enough time in the morning to get to the gym before work - let alone eat THEN wait a half hour....what if you have a bit of bodyfat..will you still sacrifice the muscle or the body fat first?

naberaber couldn't you just have a breakfast bar? They're not the best breakfast in the world but they're at least a breakfast. You could eat it as soon as you get up and then start showering and stuff ... or eat it on the way to the gym, not sure how long it is to your gym.

Why not get a shaker cup from anywhere, even GNC has them, and have a protein shake right before? This is very easy to do, all you need to do dump in the required amount of protein, add water and shake and drink. Takes a minute or so. This will very much help preserve lean tissue when working out. Your body will use it for fuel rather than muscle building, but isn't this better than it using your existing muscle? You need to negate this as much as possible. You need lean tissue. It is why you do this, to get that hard, toned, lean look. And not to mention the fat burning qualities that come from it naturally.

I started doing as bb1 suggested a couple of days ago and know what? I actually felt better during and after my cardio. I always drink the shake anyway, now I'll just drink it first.

Can someone suggest a good protien shake? One that isn't too expensive, but that'll do the job?

Thanks,
Tim

Sure, Optimum Nutrition has reformulated their protein. You can get the old whey, still quality stuff, at GNC of all places for $19.99. It is great for post training.(Don't get the strawberry...yuk!)

ok, i am 5 11 and 280lbs. I graduated highschool at 180. How do I get back where i should be. I recently started to lift weights about a month ago along with cardio. This week i started a 4 day split workout(legs, chest, rest, bicept/back, shoulders/tri)

Help me out with what my day should consist of. what should i eat. when should i exercise. The afternoon is the only time to lift.

Hello....

That's a lot of questions.

First off.. workout when it's best for you... if it's the PM, then do it... better than never doing it.

As for diet... check out the Grocery List in the diet forum. If it's on there, eat it... if it's not.. don't.

What does your diet consist of now?

well, i have been eating oatmeal in the morning, or maybe special k. Most days i bring a couple of sandwiches to work. Supper, who knows. Sometimes i eat good, and sometimes its bad.

i have worked out for month or so and no results. I can't understand. i know sometimes i don't eat well but i still have lifting weights and doing cardio.

should I eat even better. I do eat alot of grain products(wheat bread, oatmeal, cereal) but do i have to be very strict in what eat, eventhough i am working out everyday.

Yes. Eat better. Five or six smaller meals a day to meet your nutritional goals. You aren't gonna do your body any good without a proper diet.

It just takes a while to see results. Keep doing your workout.
