What motivates you??? you know when it early in the morning and you've got to train or maybe when you coming to the end of your routine and your 'feeling the burn' and need that little bit extra in the mind to finish it off.

I just wanted to know out of curiosity and maybe pick a few mind tips along the way.

Thanks!!!

I'll answer this question with candy! M & M's!

No, not the candy-coated shell that melts in your mouth, but not in your hands. No, I'm talking about Music and Mirrors!

I workout to music that motivates me on many different levels. Some is high energy, some is used as a reminder. You know, like the song that was "your song" when you and the ex were together. But now you really don't like her very much, and you want to be a better person than she could ever be? LOL Sorry, Saturday morning humor....

And the mirrors tell their own tale. My goal when I go to the gym is to see something in the mirror, or to lift a weight or surpass a previous goal EVERY SINGLE TIME I walk in there. If I don't, I'm slackin'!

Without my music lineup, I'd crumble. I listen to everything from Rage to DMX to Limp Bizkit. I combine that with a generalized anger I carry around and the knowledge that if I quit now, much time and effort has been wasted.

If that doesn't do it for you, tie a steak to a long-billed ball cap and wear it to the gym :))

lol @Ogun. Tie on Steak?

Emuboy, I agree, music works extremely well - although I also find that if I do not finish the workout to my expectations (I've been slacking), I get angry with myself and hey, I'd rather finish the workout well than listen to my inner dressing down! lol

Sorry my fellow freetrainers, true motivation doesn't just come from the music we listen to, or even that steak on the ball cap. (Tried it, cap kept falling off and I could not get away from the dogs...or the bodybuilders and powerlifters. Not a pretty sight)

What motivates us is an internal desire to feel, look, and be the best we can in this short life. It's that mind numbing, muscle growing, animalistic instinct to blow past that last threshold, that last sticking point, that last personal record. It's that feeling when you perform an exercise better than you ever have and the satisfaction of knowing that you can and will do it again, and even improve yourself.

When I was taking step-aerobics classes (no laughing, you ever see the women who take those classes? not to mention teach them?) my motivation came from knowing that I just performed the entire routine and was able to keep a level heart rate.

But when it came down to that last gasp, that last rep, that final pump, the motivation was that feeling of success, that sense of accomplishment. When I don't want to try another rep, I think of how awesome it's going to feel....and that last rep explodes from inside me.

Just my thoughts

Ditto on that! Things like music and steak may motivate us, but it's our true desire to succeed that wins out in the end.

A few months ago I beat a long-term goal that I've had of running 4 miles in under 30 minutes, and let me tell you - a lot of it was pure willpower, and how I knew I would feel when I crossed that finish line!

Congratulations Aaron! That's motivation, that's determination. Most of all, that's awesome!
