I am becoming increasingly concerned at the amount of people, i see not only using poor techniques in my gym but they have started holding their breath while weight training, i no this is very dangerous an can cause blackouts while still lifting the weight. But i would like to know the biological reasons as to why this happens, I dont like explaining things without evidence to back up my statementand therefor ehave trouble approaching people about this topic. If any body has any information on this subject and would be kind enough to reply I would be most greatfull.

Many Thanks Darren

The reason is that when you lift you increase the blood pressure in your body, as well as use oxygen up. Holding your breath increase the BP as well as limits your oxygen intake. This causes the dizzyness, and blackouts.

Two problems with holding your breath for too long during lifting:

1) Your body requires alot more oxygen while working out than when sitting on the couch; what O2 is in the blood is used very quickly. By holding your breath, your are resctricting the amount of O2 that your body can take in and therefore use. When your brain's O2 intake is cut short, you pass out in your body's attempt to get breathing again.

2) By holding your breath and exerting a lot of work effort (lifting weight), you end up increasing your blood pressure, as well as intra-cranial pressure. So, if you have a pre-existing problem that can be effected by higher BP, your increase can cause some major medical problems.

Concern is good <smile> Shows that you're a thoughtful individual. I believe your question was answered very well already.

Thank you for thr replies, however I know that holding breath causes the blood pressure to increase, there is a known theory and it involves the diaphragm bein pushed up therefore affecting the pressure within the thoracic cavity which then causes something within the body become trapped and dissfunctional which then causes the heart to stop. Any body know wo the theory is called and the correct biology behined the theory.

The cause for the increase in blood pressure and the cause for stopping the heart are two different mechanisms: holding your breath for a long and intense time causes severe vaso-constriction, thereby elevating your BP, though I cannot remember what the name of the mechanism is. The stopping of the the heart, or slowing down of its beating (which is more likely) is caused by exerting pressure on the vegus nerve, either by the diaphragm or in the neck.

The only time holding your breath can be useful is during the very critical moment of the movement. It helps you stabilize your diaphragm and lower back to avoid possible injuries, but this only last around a second........
