Ok so I have the form down and all and I am getting close to hitting numbers I hit last year (had some layoffs and injuries). I am finding that my wrists are not able to handle the weight like they used too. Inparticular my right one hurts. They stay more upright on lighter sets but when I get over 240 or so they bench back.....

I have very small wrists and the begining of the forearms are smaller too. I know the usualy forarm exercises etc, my problem is that if I voer use the forearms I get tennis elbow......so given that what can I do....I think this is holding me back a bit..what about wrist wraps? If so what kind type etc? Not looking for some to compete in now...but still I need some ideas.

Wrist Wraps is you best friend and have correct this exact thing for me.

I like the thumb looped sets get mine on Amazon a pair of Harbingers but IMO they are too thin although working just fine so I would look at top Powerlifter names like Inzer, APT and etc.

They are cheap http://www.prowriststraps.com/weight_lifting_wrist_wraps_powerlifting_wrap

I have a sprained left wrist right now and turning a doorknob sends pains through it. I haven't missed a day in the gym, though. I have APT Convict 20-inch wrist wraps and they're a God-send. I wrap my left wrist up tight and there's no pain, even with 385+ on bench. The only thing that really hurts with the wrap is curling the heavy DBs (above 80lbs) up for inclines and Arnold presses; I have someone help me with that.

Point is, try the wraps. Work on strengthening yor wrists in the meantime, but get a pairs of wraps anyway. They're great to have in your gym bag...

Get them here and I would go with the 20 inchers.

Yeah, what he said.

Enter the promo code "SPECIAL15" for 15% off your order. If you have any questions, call APT. Alan is very good to deal with.

SFG posted a good link.

I use lever far bar(thick handle) to do front, rear, overhead, side levers to strengthen my wrists....for recovery I use reps of 15-30.....for more strength you can experiment with lower reps...

movements with a weight plates can also help...such as doing side to side or up and down for high reps...

Most (all that I have seen) people that have problems with cocking their wrists back aren't holding the bar properly. Most people tend to hold it too high and not sit it in the outside of their palm. I haven't found anyone that I couldn't get to straighten their wrists by fixing this.

Wrist wraps are a help though, whether or not you are cocking your wrists. Even lose, they may help you feel a lot better. I would get something a with a little more flex than the Mambas, look around or send Alan an email.

I think he means and he is correct I did this also holding high meaning holding the bar more up by the finger around the knuckle which is easy to do with light weight.

I use to roll my wrist holding to high meaning the bar would spin or roll on my while I still had real tight grip so my wrist would roll with it.

I learned to lower the grip in my palm and things got better no roll or spin of the bar and wrists stay straight.

If you are able to, or access to one. Benching with a thick bar, would/could help with having the bar in the right spot in your hands. We have a 90lb "axile" with no knurling thats 90lbs we used to use.( kinda pricy tho) Then we got a knurled 20lb thick bar(hallow). it's light as a feather...but it was cheap...and its rated to 400lbs.( it was failry cheap, and light enough to do other things with)

Could try going thumbless? So the weight sits in meat of your hands, over the forearm vs further back in hand, putting pressure on the wrists. With thumb behind the bar, it puts another "finger" behind it as well.

Just a few thoughts.

i know andrew is a big fan of the suicide grip he is mentioning in the last part. i think his ideas are good to learn for the future, but you really need to learn how to hold it right.

basically the web between your thumb and pointer finger should be jammed up on the bar. the rest is pretty self explanatory. this will help fixing the cocking issue.

i very much love my wraps too. just make sure to use them sparingly. i find that if i use them ALL the time, then my wrist gets a little weaker. now, i only use them when i am going for a max. i rarely use them even when doin board work with 100+ % of my chest max...
