Natural Peanut Butter

I've exclusively eaten natural (no added sugar, etc) peanut butter for the past year or so, but was surprised when I compared the nutrition label with a jar of "regular" Jif PB. According to the labels, the only thing that really separates the two is 1g of sugar and about 150 mg of sodium per serving (there may be preservatives I didn't notice). Is this really enough difference to justify paying extra for "natural" peanut butter?

In my opinion, I think it's healthier and a better deal because the natural stuff is pure peanut oil, and no other bad fats. But thats just me!

I agree with Carivan. Commercial PB have stabalizing agents in them such as hydrogenated oils, dextrose, and or corn syrup. By law they only have to be 90% peanuts...so what's the other 10%? Also, before processing they remove the skin which is nutritious as well.

I get natural peanut butter as well as soy nut butter. If you don't stir it up well it's a lot like eating wet concrete but I prefer the natural. What is with the prices being almost double with some of this "healthy food"?

Stay with natural and pay the little bit extra as stated earlier regular pb has many added hydrogenated oils and fats that you do not need as well as sugar and who knows what else as far as preservatives good luck

You are forgetting about hydrogenated oils. And natural peanut butter has much more of the healthy fats.

As far as the "wet concrete", my trainer gave me a great tip. First, remove some of the extra oil that is on top, stir it up really really really well and then refrigerate it. It is still soft, doesn't separate, so you don't have to stir it up anymore. Of course, that does not work with the jar I like to keep at my desk, but at home it is great.

i just saw an ad for this - a good idea for stirring peanut butter without splashing oil everywhere.
