yeah so by the title of this post you can probably figure out that i saw an nba star at the grocery store today...
i was standing in the checkout line and all of the sudden i noticed that the register girls seemed kind of awe-struck. i turned around and dikembe mutumbo was standing there, and looking very tall. ok, so maybe his best playing days are behind him, but he USED to be an nba star.
anyway, that was my fun thing of the day. and no, i didn't ask for his autograph. i thought the man should be able to shop in peace. (sadly i was one of about 4 people in the store who shared this sentiment.)

I was at Walgreens when I lived in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and was standing next to Walter Payton. These chicks were freaking out behind me.

I was coming out of the bathroom at the Jersey Turnpike and came face to face with King Kong Bundy.

I had a political science class with Larry Johnson and Stacey Augman. But we get to see a lot of "stars" out here walking around in public.

LJ's house is next to our marina. He has a full sized basketball court in the lower floor with full lake view.
My wife coralled James Brown at an interstate gas station for an autograph. He looked thrilled to be giving it. I played my harmonica with Jimmy Buffet at the Blue Grass Saloon 30 years ago about 6 months before he recorded "Come Monday". Thats all the stars we've encountered.

Willie Ames came through the drive-thru while I was on shift at Taco many years ago. I didn't see him personally, but the drive-thru guys swears it was him.
I had Patch Adams autograph my Patch Adams book.
Best one - We were at Worlds Of Fun (like 6 flags, only in KC). People were pointing at this big black guy wearing brand new Nikes and gold chains and brand name clothes and whispering. Finally I asked someone what the fuss was all about. What I found out was that my kids were riding the bumper cars with Percy Snow's daughter.
Everyone was being polite and not asking for his autograph, but they were also staying away from him like he was sick or something. I walked right over to him, watched the kids for a minute, and said, "Looks like fun, huh? Wish I could be out there with them." He just smiled, looked down at his massive body, and laughed. "Yeah! It's been a long time!" Then we pointed out our kids to each other, shook hands, said "Nice to meet you", didn't exchange names, and went on our way.
