Hey I just joined this community today. I would like to get advise on how to get started. I recently quit smoking and would like to continue on my quest for a healthier lifestyle. I would like to loose 20lbs and tone up a little. Any advise would be appreciated.

Fill out the info for the Fitness Plan, look at what the Nutritional Plan suggests, and follow the fitness plan and diet.
What you bring into it is what you get out of it. Work hard and the results will come. Good luck! :) -------------- ----------------------------------- Getting there... one kg at a time... ----------------------------------- |

Hey there fellow mom! Welcome to FT! I haven't worked out in three months due to a back injury. I take care of my 10 month old son (which is physically taxing) and that's it. I researched "clean eating" on this website and started to clean up my diet over the past month. Mind you, I never cut calories, just substituted one type of food for another. I have lost 10 lbs in one month just by eating more responsibly! There's a grocery list of clean foods posted under the diet and nutrition board that I've got printed out and tacked to my fridge. Good luck achieving your goal.-------------- \"We must be the change we wish to see in the world\" - Ghandi

thanks for the tips. I like the idea wasakat. I have a 4 year old and a 9 year old. I also babysit my niece who is 8 months and my nephew who is 4 months. Finding time for myself to do a workout is tough so i will look into the clean eating section. Thanks again.

Holy mackeral, and I thought I had my hands full. You might not be working out, but you are exercising! I'm not saying give up on ever getting into a workout routine, but you'd be surprised what the food side can do by itself. I've always been a weightlifting fanatic, ever since high school. I've never put stock into eating correctly b/c I was ignorant about it and thought that "eating right" meant self denial and being miserable. I was completely wrong. It just takes research to discover what eating right is really all about. For example, I made a turkey "meat loaf" tonight topped with tomato paste/ketchup that was so yummy and I was stuffed! Now that's what I'm talking about.-------------- \"We must be the change we wish to see in the world\" - Ghandi

Yeah it is a little hectic at times. I even quit my job three months ago so that I can spend more time with the kids. My first thing I want to know is those that changed their eating habits, how do I do it so that the kids won't freak out. My oldest is pretty picky and doesn't seem to like a lot of things. So how do I change so that the will enjoy it. I learned how to cook from my grandfather. He fries everything in fat or butter. Help!

Hmmm... well, I don't know what your kids are eating right now, but here's what I do when we're eating stuff like broccoli/carrots/etc. I cook up a little bit of pasta for my son. Then I take some of the veggies and puree them into a paste and stir the paste into the sauce. He gets his veggies without knowing it. Of course, I also put some veggies on his plate so that he can eat them if he wants too. His plate of food looks almost identical to mine and my husbands with the pasta as extra. Even if your kids refuse to eat the "new" food they see on their plate, they'll get it in the pasta. That way, you don't have to worry about them starving. I choose pasta b/c a kid sized serving cooks up so fast and easy that it doesn't feel like I'm cooking a whole extra meal in addition to the one I'm cooking for my hubby and myself. If kids see mom and dad gobbling up a food on a regular basis, eventually, the little monkeys start to eat it to b/c kids are wired to mimic and that will eventually overpower their "fear/dislike" of the new food. Just put a little of all the good stuff on the plate for them along with something else you know they will definitely eat. Then sit back and enjoy your new and improved meals.
If you tell me more about what your kids do and don't eat right now, I will be able to give you more specific tricks. As far as the fat/butter issue. Start small with a substitute. Switch over to Smart Balance spread. You'll still be getting a lot of extra calories, but at least they'll be from healthy fats that will clean out your system rather than clogging it up. -------------- \"We must be the change we wish to see in the world\" - Ghandi

Well lets see, my kids do like veggies and fruits, and the more that I think about it I don't think that it is about what they won't eat it's about how to prepare new things. I have recently for the most part stopped frying everything in butter and trying to bake a lot more. Also I have started to use Pam like products. I guess what I am saying is that I am more scared to try new things then they are. My parents never introduced new foods unless they came from a box. I need help with some good ideas.

Do you own "The Joy of Cooking?" It's my bible when it comes to cooking and recipes. Here's one to try (I just made it and it was great!) Turkey loaf. Basically it's a meatloaf, but you use ground turkey instead of ground beef. Turkey is the ultimate protein source. It's even leaner than chicken, and it blows even the leanest ground beef out of the water. I cooked it according to recipe and then topped it when it was finished and out of the oven with a 50/50 blend of ketchup and tomato paste. So good, so filling, and so clean. It's quick and pain free, too. That's the key for me. Food can't take forever to prepare or require my constant supervision while it's cooking.-------------- \"We must be the change we wish to see in the world\" - Ghandi

no I don't own that book. I did try the chicken tender recipe that I found on here and my girls loved it. Then I steamed some carrots and had mashed potatoes and gravy on the side. They were in heaven. What do you think? How did I do?

Sounds tasty. I haven't looked at any of the recipes here, but I think I might start.-------------- \"We must be the change we wish to see in the world\" - Ghandi
