Hi, my name is Cristy, I'm 34, 5'6", 142lbs. I recently bought a treadmill and have been doing the preset programs in the morning everyday. Before purchasing this my activities throughout the day were sitting at a desk on a computer (no exercise AT ALL!) I'm learning so much and I've read topics for hours on end, I am in the process of changing my eating habits from skipping breakfast, having a huge lunch and huge supper to eating after my workout on the treadmill, at 10:00am, at 12:00, at 3:00pm, at 5:30pm. I learned that I need to incorporate weights-which I have begun to do before treadmill twice a week. I learned that to help shed off fat I need to incorporate whey protein, so I skipped on over to Wal-mart and bought some-after workout I drink low-cal orange juice with calcium and I mixed it with it-it was pretty good! Then I noticed in fine print on the package...DO NOT USE FOR WEIGHT REDUCTION. I want to start off easy and not over do it-my weight loss goal for September is to lose my cigarettes...I don't care about the number of lbs I weigh-I want to be in better shape with toned muscle. Can someone tell me exactly what to buy on the whey protein, this is what I bought to help me lose fat:
100% Premium Whey Protein Powder Serving size: 1 scoop (30g) Calories:110 Calories from fat: 15 Total fat: 1.5g Saturated fat: 1g Teans fat:0g Choesterol: 35mg Sodium: 55mg Potassium: 170mg Total Carbohydrate: 1g Dietary Fiber: 0g Sugars: 1g Protein: 23g Ingredients: Protein blend (Whey Protein Concentrate, Whey Protein Isolate), Natural and Artifical flavors, Soy Lecithin, Acesulfame K, Sucralose. I would really appreciate some feedback and I thank you in advance for your wisdom!! |

Well Hi cristy!seems like you're off to a great start....as far as the OJ...yes...low in fat...HIGH in suger!!!I take mine with 1% milk...I think you can even use water...but I like the milk...what I have finally GOT from reading up on here is you can eat what you want...as long as it's within your daily caloric intake...as far as the treadmill....I have to say I was in love with mine...been my best friend for many years...never understood why it was so hard to maintain my weith loss when I was running SO much though!!!So finnally I dropped the cardio and picked up the weights and it has done wonders.I'm just telling you this so when after some time you stop seeing results from cardio and light weight training...you'll be open minded to the thought of picking up weights on a regular basis...right now you just need to remember "less calories in and more out" to see results...that took the longest time for it to sink in for me...to simple...and I love to overcomplicate things!!:)Any way...you've started off great....I like 1% milk in my protien!!!
oh...and welcome to FT!!!:) |

Thanks KC! The OJ I use is 50calories and 10g sugar but I will definately switch to fat free milk! What Whey is best? Everyone told me to add whey protein and I did and the bottle says DO NOT USE FOR WEIGHT REDUCTION, what do you recommend?

mmmm...well the others will be able to answer this more specificaly for you...I just compared yours to mine...the calories are a tad higher...but your protien is alot higher than mine...mine is only 17 grams...I take the protien because it's hard for me to get in as much protien during the day as I'm supposed to...and I also am not a breakfast eater..so the protien with some oats and fruit mixed in works well for me...So I guess I'm saying....I don't know:)
...if you don't get a response here...try the nutrition...or the supplements forum...they can give you a more specific answer...I do think you should figure out WHY you're taking it....like I said for me it's just to hard to get in the protien I need in a day...and taking it this way keeps it in my calorie range....which for me is 1400 to 1500 cal a day...find what your caloric intake should be...then figure how protien fits in....as to the why it's a good idea to take...you'll get a better answer in another forum....I've had to much coffee this morning...can you tell???I'm not normaly quite THIS long winded...also...one more thing...if you want you can check out the buddy up thread in the general forum posted by Angel220...we have a little group,we do weigh ins on fridays..and offer encouragement through out the week....whew...ok...I'll let you go now!!!:) |

Ok, I checked and I' to get 142 grams of protein and I'm allowed 1891 total calories. I'm new at this and I'm "winging it", I have no clue what calories I consume each day. So I guess I really don't know much at all about diet; I just read that I needed whey protein for weight loss after my workout, I went to the nutrion supplement and there wasn't much of a differnce in grams of protein and calories...I'm lost! I'm going to GNC today and I would like to ask for their opinion but mostly it's just kids working there to handle the register. I just don't understand why it says "do not use for weight reduction"

I went and checked it out...WOW, there is so much to this. I think I'm over my head. I just wanted to get more fit and toned and take "baby steps" into this. I feel overwelmed to say the least:(--well, I guess I will look on the bright side of things for now, since I got my treadmill which is becoming part of me-I have more energy throughout the day, I feel stronger, it gave me the confidence to start searching for more ways to get in shape, so I bought fitness magazines and started picking apart the articles-I eat mini meals throughout the day, I'm drinking loads of water, starting to lift light weights..light weights are all I can handle at this point. Hopefully carivan will answer my question on what the heck to buy, and I do need the protein in my diet-I was only going to use it once a day for weight loss. I thank you for your help, I really do....just frustrated.

Whey protein is a poor fat loss agent. It is rapidly digested, therefore amino acids are rapidly oxidized. With gastric emptying added in hurried(forget what all these terms mean really), it will be so quickly digested you will be hungry very soon. Whey protein is best utilized post workout. I would advise it after a resistance workout, after cardio just your normally scheduled meal would be fine.-------------- Maximus from Gladiator....Strength and Honor! |

Your absolutely right! I'll keep up with what I'm doing, I'm taking on alot of changes in my life and they are all positive, I'll focus more on my quit date (cigarettes) which is this Monday rather than Whey!! THANK YOU!

I've read his message probably 30 times!!
:) The first sentence is what I clearly understood. "Whey protein is a poor fat loss agent" The rest...well...it's over my head. I'll stick his first sentence. (I have to laugh at my ignorance, please forgive; my knowledge will grow with time) |

Well, trying to make it 'readable' for you, it is a poor fat loss agent due simply to speed of digestion. In essence, this will leave you hungry in a short period of time, and the chances of binging a bit to satisfy your hunger grow.
Besides that, balanced meals are the ticket. Whey protein is ideal for post workout, for those trying to gain muscle, to swiftly aid recovery. This is the beauty of whey, as mentioned the quick digesting, thus fast acting. Post workout you have to get the body back 'in order', in other words level off blood sugars, get central nervous system back in order if you taxed it, etc. Protein synthesis can still happen, but it will be more limited till the body is back in 'order'. Again, this is where whey shines, it is very quick acting. -------------- Maximus from Gladiator....Strength and Honor! |

Thank you very much for "breaking it down for me"...I'm almost really glad that I did drink it this morning-it was my first workout with arms using....(DON"T LAUGH!!)...5 lb. weights in each hand doing 12 reps for each exercise.(Remember, before 2 weeks ago sitting at a desk for 8 years was my form of exercise) That workout was 6:00 this morning and I thought I was really wasting my time...I was WRONG!!! My arms are already sore and really stiff!! Your right about the fast digestion process...no wonder I've been so hungry today! cristy--I think "Do Not Use for Weight Loss" is just a disclaimer from the days when people were going on liquid protein diets and dying. I really believe it is just a warning to prevent people from using the whey as a meal replacement...they don't mean it can't be part of a weight loss regimen, but that it is a supplement and is not meant to replace actual food.

Oh. Well, I guess I don't have to worry-I'm one of those girls who does not replace any meal with a drink. Of course, that's probably why I got out of shape-ate whenever I wanted and NEVER exercised! ============ Quoting from msmogreen: cristy--I think "Do Not Use for Weight Loss" is just a disclaimer from the days when people were going on liquid protein diets and dying.
