I just found out that we have a new gym and it looks like I can afford it. No contract, $35mo, open 24-7.

When I go to take the tour, what am I looking for and what questions should I ask?

One thing is all the equipment in good shape clean etc...same for locker rooms. Is there enough room if it gets busy...any leakes in the ceiling etc.

Look for women in hot pink leg warmers and matching thongs...
Make sure there is a studio with a big mirror to do bicycle crunches in front of.

But seriously - make sure it is clean, ask about the certification of its employees.

Most places will give you a free pass to use the gym for a week. This will let you decide if you will be comfortable working out there.

Do they offer classes you are interested in, and do the classes come with the membership or are they additional?

Ask for an equipment orientation, ask for 3 free training sessions (or more if you can get them). Ask about pool/hottub maintainenece (or don't go in either..).

Check out how the equipment looks - are the pads clean and unripped, are the machines clean and not to rickety?

Do they haVE ENOUGH CARDIO EQUIPMENT FOR THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE WORKING OUT?OOps, caps lock!

Is the locker room clean? How is the atmosphere?

Go and check it out at the time of day you would typically be using the gym - see if it is overcrowded, understaffed, underequipped. See if it feels like a place you want to spend time at.

I'd also ask, whats the age group that works out or comes there.......I have a free "membership" to the ymca , my only complaint is a bunch of 12 yr old running around the place. Always trying to "work out" and some have almost hurt them selves, the staff is soposed to only let 15 and onlder in, but they to busey sitting in the office, reading or talking to people.
I'd also wanna see if it has machines that you like to use, and how many. Must of the crap ... to me anyways i can't use or don't like too, see if they have what you prefere and like to use.

Take the tour but before you ask questions see what they think are the best things about the gym. If it's the protein bar and the tvs in front of the treadmills maybe it's not an exercise gym, but a socail gym.

most of all what do YOU want from a gym. Does it have the facilities you want or need? A pool and would you use it? A sauna... Outdoor facilities... social nights... sunbeds...free water fountains and shampoo and driers, free weights and is the range of resistance machines workable for you? cardio gear in good order. Is it a muscle mary gym or an average commuter/housewife gym and does it suit you? is it more than 20 minutes from home and could you be bothered? etc... you know what you want so right it all down as questions and give a point for yes and none for a no and then decide does the percentage of yes's add up enough to join?.
