Hi all-
My name is Patrick and I just joined this forum. I recently rejoined the U.S. Army after being away from it (and most types of fitness....) for 7 years. My short-term goal is to lose another 20 lbs (now I am 183lbs and 5'7", and 36 years old), and to be able to pass the APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test) by early March (running two miles in 17:42, do 36 pushups and 42 situps in 2 minutes for each event. These are the minimum standards for my age category.) I don't know if these goals are realistic or not. I am not holding my breath on the 20 lbs that soon, but I hope the PT test is attainable :) I am also on a quasi-Atkins type of a diet. Any and all advice for this old soldier will be appreciated and welcomed. Hooah!

Welcome to FT! And yes, you may be able to achieve your goal since your test is in March. That gives you about 2 months to increase your stamina and strength.

I agree with rpacheco, you can achieve your goal. anything is possible if you set your sights on it! I can tell you first hand that the APFT is possible, Because I did the PFT in the Marine Corps. Ran 3 miles in 17:56, 80 situps in 2 minutes, and for the Corps 20 deadhang pullups. You can do! have a positive outlook, and follow your heart.

If you are exercising you need your carbs. Adkins does say this in his book but most people don't bother reading more than the 1st chapter.

Sorry Charlie (couldn't resist saying that!) - I don't think that's correct. Atkins does highly recommend exercise, but doesn't say to not do his diet while doing it.... I am actually going to re-read it and see for sure.

No, I meant the Adkins book recommends adding carbs as exercise intensifies.

I'm new and training for the AFPT too. I'm not the soldier though, I'm an Army Wife and I just want to show everyone I can do it! I've just started to train more intensely, I've already got the sit-ups maxed, push-ups are coming around, but that run...I can go endurance-wise, but the speed/time thing is what is going to get me. Right now the only place I have to run is in the school (gym and up and down hallways) I'm north of the Arctic Circle, and everything outised is ice and -15 dg F. Brrrr!
