I just thought I would make a post as to the supplement companies new tactics to sell you products. They realize that we are getting ourselves more educated, and the same old sales pitch no longer works with these folks. So, they are now supplying free "research" flyers with magazines, or just laying on the checkout desks for instance in health food stores. While this is great, they give you sound research(while touting their product), they fail to include a necessary piece of research to make it justifiable. For instance I have noticed all these free research papers touting one companies brand of ALA. And as mentioned, while the research is sound, they fail to include the little part about if it is r-ala or s-ala. This is very important of course, because it has to say r-ala, or it may be useless. There are cases where the S(-)-enantiomer is merely less effective than R(+)-Lipoic Acid – and also cases where, at worst, the S(-)-form is just totally ineffective. But as you dig into the lipoic acid story, you’ll also see many cases in which the S(-)-enantiomer actually counteracts the enefits of R(+)-lipoic acid!
So, when one company is handing you research, be aware if they are selling a product. If so, research further into the product. We are getting educated, but we have to be very shrewd, as the marketing companies are realizing this and upping the stakes to get our money.
